why in gods name would you think a 19 year old with NO pro experience would be ready for the NHL?
- Dozzer

Based on where he was picked, and the many examples currently in the NHL. It's a two way street though, if he's not ready at 19, the Leafs will make the right call...I hope.

I thought he was better than McDavid and Eichel?

You're the first person ever to say that. You should ban yourself.

listen to what the leafs brass are saying when it comes to development

and since they are the ones who make the call.. i tend to think their opinion regarding player development will be the one that is used

- Dozzer

They have been pretty straight forward in recent days that if a young player outplays/earns a spot at camp he will get a shot...

Detroit hasn't had a top 4 pick though. And when they have under Hollands watch dating back to 83, Keith Primeau and Yzerman both went directly into the NHL. No, Marner isn't Crosby, but he has a lot more in common with guys like Duchene, Landeskog, Monahan then with any Red Wing pick. Again, the wings have used the 3 to 4 year model with guys picked in the 20s, 30s and 40s. That's it.

my bet is 3 more years of development

and nobody is changing my opinion on that.

And your opinion isn't wrong. Personally, I haven't formed an opinion yet. I'm keeping an open mind, that's all I'm saying. I actually just want to see him in camp, see if there's something there I haven't seen before from a Leafs prospect.

so you bring up one of your best prospects and play him 4th on your NHL C depth chart?

good plan.

- Dozzer

come on

I in no way said that. I will leave that part up to Leafs coaches and management

A lot will change in 2 years with the leafs..dont pencil any current players in the lineup

Don't worry Marner will bring the cup to the Leafs who cares if he isn't better than McJesus!

Leafs Stanley Cup 2017!!!

Its the 100 year plan!

i bet both kadri and holland are here for the next 2 years

and both would be considered higher on the C depth chart than Marner

1: leafs have constantly stated they are taking the patient approach

2: the hunters own the junior team he plays for

a couple more years of junior.. just wait and see

He's not eligible for all next year.

Go Ryan stroke on him.... 2 more ohl years, 3rd year starts in the ahl and then he comes up if/when he tears up the ahl.

seems about right, but it also seems too far away.

but yah, looks as if hands are tied at this point.

dumb rule

its possible 2 more full years, I am just saying if you look at all the comparables.. its a rare thing for a player to score at his rate at 17 (and assuming again at 18) at 2+ points a game to get a 3rd season in Jr.

Is there even 1 example?

thats the one thing i could see happening here, the leafs requesting that he be exempt from the transfer agreement so he can play in the AHL next season

which, if my opinion mattered, would be optimal

and what if he regresses?

nobody seems to consider this

without Domi there Marner is going to get a lot more attention from shutdown forwards and defenses

I don't see them changing the rules or making exceptions..... Opens the door that they wouldn't be able to close again.

We need to wait to see how this camp goes and this coming year plays out before we start carving things in stone.

i am basing my opinion on the slow development model that shanahan and co. have been preaching about

i mean look at this year.. the top 6 seems a lil thin.. but instead of giving nylander a spot on a top 6 wing.. they signed journeymen and are giving guys tryouts

everything the leafs are doing is right in the line with the patient development method

he wont be eligible.

he has only played two years of junior and wont be 20 by Dec 31 2017

he would need 4 years of major junior or be 20 by Dec 31 2017

he will meet neither criteria

two more years leading the knights. bet on it.

- Dozzer

I'll take that bet for 100 US$.
