Maybe resigns for 3 years, max money. Then TO bound, just as they are bringing up/giving ice time to all of the picks they have developed. Unless Toronto insists he comes this or next season if he wants max money and years in order to take advantage of his influence and assistance in developing the youngsters. As well as helping to attract premium free agents for discounted rates to accelerate the rebuild. So much can happen !!! But I don't see it happening until at least the TDL.

So true, it all depends on whether Toronto wants him now. It would mess up the tank for sure.

I guess the will just tell the lightning that they have to keep him for two more years before trading him for Phaneuf. This off course after TO tells them to sign him for 8 at 10 per season.

Oh and they make the lightning retain half of his contact at that time making his cap hit 5m.

This is around the time they tell other teams to start losing and the league to give the the cup for the next 6 years. They'll probably just tell them to cancel the playoffs and just award them the cup.

Or Tampa will do what they want and Toronto will wait and wait hoping that a star bigger then Clarkson will come home to play. .....

I also don't see him walking as a free agent. IF he truly wants to go to Toronto, he'll work out a deal with Tampa where they get something back in a trade, but not full market value from Toronto so he doesn't deplete their upcoming and existing future. TB will have to concede to his wishes or risk losing him for nothing. His loyalty to them will dictate SOME kind of return though, just not as much as TB would want. Again, this is all based on the assumption he actually wants to go to TO.

How many years and how much money do you give a guy that is one dimensional and has a 16" titanium rod in his leg? He doesn't play PK like Perry, Toews, and Getzlaf. He won't be on the final line when they need a goal(triplets will). And, from the interviews last year, he isn't trilled about Tyler Johnson being the go to scoring guy in the clutch. If he is asking for 11 or 12M, let him walk or trade him somewhere he would agree to and move on. The return of players and draft picks may not be great because he only has one year left. But if this team saves 11M, they would be able to sign their own players and get a 6M-2 way player to slot in. I think a lot of players want to go to Tampa, so I don't think you have to over pay for a FA. Stamkos is a great shooter. He can do that on one leg. But he doesn't make players around him better. He was only +2 on a real good team and didn't play PK. He also had a lot of empty net goals. In effect, he is a minus player. He is not great at face-offs, not great in the corners, doesn't handle the puck that well, and is average on D. I think he is a credit to the game. I really do like him. I admire how he worked hard to get back after his injury. But I can't believe there isn't more concern about giving a guy with the rod in his leg a long term deal. Football players are never the same after that injury and I don't think hockey players are either.

This again, I had to think for a minute but I remembered you, me, Arty and Riley's conversation on this. I am not even going to respond to this.

Oh right. .. stupid me. I should never assume that mega stars that are soon to be UFA's have any say in when/where they are traded to and or how much they can dictate. What was I thinking ??!!

I hope he does eventually decide to go to Toronto. It is time local Canadian boys started taking pride in where they grew up in stead of what they can make. I liked and admired the decisions made by Parise, Suter and Vanek a couple years ago. Yes a lot of money was involved but the fact these boys and the Minnesota organization were able to make this work because these local boys wanted to be back home shows me that there still is heart in this sport.

Lol

If and is a big of they will trade him to the team that offers the most.
the statement that you made regarding Tampa signing him for a couple more years while the leafs prospects developed was what I found funny.

What gives a mega star power over where they end up is nmc or ntc

: D all good. I just assume that IF he wants to stick around it would be a 2-3 deal, knowing that TO would use that time to build and develop and he may win another cup during that time.

There's a reason why no one in Tampa should be worried: Steve Yzerman.

he'll be signed, and I imagine it will be $ 72.8M for 8 years (9.1M a season)

- AlfieisKing

So the one reason no one should be worried is the same reason MSL demanded a trade?

No one here was worried about the MSL rumors either until he openly addressed it with the media. And then all hell broke loose.

Perhaps Stamkos should pull a Kessel negotiating approach and say he will not negotiate during the regular season. It got Kessel a unwarranted large contract.

Listen here jabroni, chances be that any trade involving Stammer will end with Tampa losing the trade, you hear now boy.

And that trade hasn't worked THAT well. They're stuck with Cally's unmoveable contract and the picks they got as a result of the deal don't look like they're progressing well.

My friend's brother knows a guy whose wife's cousin is a real estate agent.

Stamkos, his wife and two kids were in Toronto last weekend looking at houses to buy - they needed something in the suburbs with a backyard big enough for their unicorn.

Sorry, TB fans - sucks to be you.

Losing Stamkos to free agency or via a trade will hurt us in the short term, but the long-term still looks very bright. If he wants to put Fulfill his childhood wish And become a Toronto Maple Leaf then so be it. I only want players on the Tampa Bay Lightning that want to play here, want to stay here and want to succeed here.

The picks are fine. Let the kids develop. Two first round picks was a high price to pay but it did get your team to the SCFs.
