I want to make some names that no one else in the world uses that can rival "Shutdown Seanie."

Brayden Schenn - Breakdown Schenn
Andrew MacDonald - Ain't He a Dong Hold (more of a homonym)
Scott Laughton - Scum Bought Tin (again, more of a homonym)
Luke Schenn - Boat Anchor Boy
Vinny Lecavalier - Vinny Lehesucks

I don't think Hextall could justify a "throw away" season after committing nearly 100 million dollars to his team this off season.

process oriented and not result driven

LOL, so a team such as the Chicago blackhawks, or New York Rangers, or Pittsburgh Pens, who consider themselves contenders for the upcoming season, aren't process oriented?

Yeah, I'm sure they're just viewing it as a step forward kind of year.

If the team inexplicably makes a giant leap, or the division craters around them, I'm sure they'd take it.

But like Ron keeps saying, they're not taking any wild stabs for a short-term run... they're looking big picture, a future 4-5 season window to maximize their chances.

That's very unlike any seasons pre-Hextall around here.

- Tomahawk

While they're looking at the big picture, they'll also be trying to win hockey games. Every game they play, the players will be playing to win, and Hakstol will be coaching to win. I think the idea that Hextall does not expect this team to be a good team, is false.

WRONG!

The Flyers are true Stanley Cup contenders and should be focused on short-term gains as their primary focus. Anything less than 17 consecutive Stanley Cups the next 17 years is a bust.

i think we need umberger 3.0 or 4.0 at this point... 2.0 was the disappointing overpaid guy in colomus right ?

He was pretty damn good on his first CBJ contract. That's how he got another one from them.

Of course they'll try to win every game -- nobody said they were looking to tank.

On the other hand, they didn't exactly bring in too much outside help to push this team into the PO's either -- mostly affordable stop-gaps and locking up core pieces.

I think they can make the playoffs if certain things fall right. I think they can be a lottery team in things don't. The team will try to win, but I'd be content with steps in the right direction this year.

Depends how one defines throw away. Do they expect to contend for a Stanley Cup and will they make moves based mostly to better their immediate chances at the expense of the future? No. Do they expect to comfortably make the playoffs and maybe exchange a couple pieces of the future to solidify that? Probably not.

Do they expect to be in the dogfight for a playoff spot, while keeping an eye to the future more than worrying about success in the short term? Yes.

Not a throw away year, but not a season where they expect to contend or waltz into the playoffs as a one or two seed, either. We likely will not see them flip a 2nd & 3rd for 2nd or 3rd pair defensemen, or flip a top pick for a veteran scoring winger, unless they are young and signed to a manageable cap hit, and expected to be a part of solution in 3 or 4 years as well as during the 2015-16 season.

In the past, a Flyers team not making every effort within reason to win the Cup in a given year could have been said to be going through a throw away year. Now the mindset is be competitive in the present, while building to the future. It's a developmental year more than anything.

They're not at the point where they need to bring in more outside help. A team should make those moves to bolster the lineup, when they feel they have a legitimate chance to contend. There seems to be confusion about some things that Hextall has said, and some things read into those statements, that aren't there in my opinion.
