Two random thoughts: How about Blackwood the other night for Canada... looked sharp early and made me once again wish we had somehow picked him up (maybe trading L Schenn for a 2nd) but I am also very happy with the Koneckny selection. Ideal we could have grabbed both.
Ehrhoff not jumping at the Blue Jackets offer is odd. The longer he waits the worse it is for both he and the CJB. I think he should be thanking his lucky stars a club wants him at all at this stage of the off-season and his recent less then stellar play.

I don't understand the Ehrhoff thing either. I think his best hockey is behind him.

Let's put it to bed.
Ghost and morin in the A all year.
Sanheim and provorov sent back to junior.
This year with a new coach and a bunch of unwanted player contracts Is the throwaway year of all throwaway years.
Especially with coots and Jake signed. The only thing to do this year is see if b Schenn and laughton are in the future plans of this team. - Just5
No, lets not.
Luke Schenn is moved to create salary cap space and a roster spot.
Manning is 7th dman. Flyers carry 14 forwards including VV and Laughton to start season.
Everyone back to Junior. Ghost/Morin/Marti/Alt will battle for injury call-ups.
There's no such thing as a "throw-away" year in pro sports. If you want to have realistic expectations and close the book on a season "pre-maturely", you do it in Feb-March. If we were just "throwing the year away", I'd want Hextall to be aggressively shopping Read and Streit right now. However, they will help us compete, so they are here. And that's exactly what we'll do: compete.
Just because we have a ton of cheap, young talent waiting to develop doesn't mean we cant be a good team in the meantime. We have a very good team as of right now. The Calgary Flames were projected as a lottery team last season. What did they do? They won a playoff round without their best player. The Flyers went to the ECF a year after finishing deal last. Enough.
I'll say it right now: I think the Flyers fight for the 7-8th spot up until the last day. As long as Mason is healthy, I like our chances.

Amen! I laugh every time I read this season is a throw-away season. As you said, there is no such thing.

At 33? Yes, his "best" hockey is probably behind him. But he's still a top-4 on all 30 teams in the NHL.
There are 18 teams with less than 5 million in cap space as of this writing. Ehrhoff not wanting to accept a low ball offer is indicative of nothing. He's still a very good player. He has more than enough money to last him the rest of his life.
It's more about fit with him. Translated? He wants to win, and all the good teams that want him can't pay him.
If Hextall traded Streit today and signed Ehrhoff for 2 years, 10 million, I'd be ecstatic.

I agree, though I think they will need quite a few breaks to make the playoffs this season. However, throw away seasons certainly do occur. Case in point: 14-15 Buffalo Sabres, they had zero chance of being a playoff team, and the continually made moves to insure that they would finish last and guarantee McDavid or Eichel.

I don't condone it, but it does happen. - BiggE
Teams will make moves to better their position to build for the future, that doesn't mean they're throwing a way a season intentionally.

I agree with you.
I want guys playing well just incase at the TDL we want to make a move. The better guys play the better chance we have of making the playoffs or if that isn't the case the better chance we get back better value in any trades at the TDL or during the season.

Flyers could also be playing well enough to make a move at the deadline to turn themselves into a contender. It's unlikely but who knows what could happen.
Yeah, I'm sure they're just viewing it as a step forward kind of year.
If the team inexplicably makes a giant leap, or the division craters around them, I'm sure they'd take it.
But like Ron keeps saying, they're not taking any wild stabs for a short-term run... they're looking big picture, a future 4-5 season window to maximize their chances.
That's very unlike any seasons pre-Hextall around here.

A top 4 on all 30 teams? That feels like hyperbole, but OK.
A 33 YO defenseman with multiple concussions the previous year isn't exactly in the best negotiating position.
As for your Streit/Ehrhoff scenario....I'm not sure I agree with that either (at least on the surface).
