Do I like that they signed him without playing a game - no
But
He played 17 mpg last year and scored 21G
Expect that average to inflate to over 19mpg
Nucks can still trade him a few years down the road at a modest hit of a lil over 4M
If the Habs can move bourque with time left then Sutter can be moved if it doesn't work out
Good evaluation of how he does is after year 3 out of 6
He will still be 29-30 after year 3 - MTL1
yep. 13 goals last year, 21 this year, 29 next year. its that simple!
easily acquirable type of player. traded legitimate assets for him, then signed him to a bad deal.
now in the "convince yourself it was a good deal" phase. it's not. He's a 3rd line centre who will hopefully net you 30 points. Sign Santorelli for league min. and get the same result |

I'll break down the Sutter contract in tomorrow's blog, so we can get back to that soon enough.
Right now, may I direct your attention to Jake Virtanen's fine game against the Czechs, in progress right now? After 40 minutes, he has a goal and an assist and has been one of the better forwards on the ice.... |

Sutter > Santorelli.
Is Sutter better than Bonino? The numbers don't indicate he is. Throw in the cap flexibility and what it took to get him and it's a bad deal IMO. |

In your blog tomorrow can you mention Vantel approves this signing |

Pittsburg set the bar on his salary. He easily would have gotten and did get 4mil plus.
People can crap all over him any way they want but Canucks don't have too many 20 goal scorers.
People thinking he is the third line centre , think again . He was signed here as a second line centre . So his salary is fitting |

Sutter is trash we should never have made the deal then pay a third line center over 4 mil, sweet deal. Could have bonino and mathias for the same price as sutter if not less. Benning is trash im done. wake me up when is fired. |

We have a 2nd line center in horvat and a third in bonino. The trade and signing are dog poop. |

Benning has no clue what he is doing. He is doing exactly what the flames and leafs did for years which was over estimate your poop roster that is never good enough. So he wants to trade vrbata and hamhuis now but yet signs sutter. The guy is (frank)ed. |

I think that he was brought in to add some versitity. Rather than drop Horvat into the 2C spot and hope that he is ready, now there's a bit of a buffer. And when Horvat passes him, then we have a 3C that can also play on special teams.
I didn't love the trade, but I don't hate the signing, if that makes any sense. I would have preferred to have seen him play for a couple of months before committing for five years but to be honest I'm way more worried about Weisbrod being named AGM than I am about signing Sutter. |

Fully understand and most people here feel that way. I am one of those expecting more. |

Flames are pretty good, no? And they weren't really bad for very long. If that's the trajectory we're on then I can live with that. |

How's that work for Horvat? He gets stuck behind at 3C, or they compete for the job, or most likely the difference in ice time is so slight that there is little difference between 2C and 3C. However it works, I'd be disappointed if Sutter's getting more ice than Horvat by the end of the season.

I think it works out very well. It removes the pressure of a 20 year old needing to and be the guy. When the time happens naturally then you can switch. It gives Horvat a two year buffer.
Because our cupboards are thin we feel the need to push ( like e with Higgins). |

If that's what you believe he was brought in to play as for the next 5 years I'm surprised you liked this trade. Do you think Sutter's a fitting 2C on this (or any other) team?
Offensively (and defensively on the PP) Sutter is most likely a downgrade on both Matthias and Richardson and is certainly a downgrade to Bonino at 5-on-5. He's not an upgrade over Bonino on the PP. He is much better at faceoffs though (something we've been terrible at with in-zone defensive starts) and slightly better at hits. |
