Talked to my Hawks friends. They say the reason he was moved was because the Hawks wanted to set the development clock back because Clendening was NHL ready but fell behind TVR, Runblad, and Johns in the depth chart. Traded him away for an equal prospect who was a few more years away. Not saying he's great since he did fall behind so many other prospects in his system but he's definitely not a bust yet.

Sounds like a Harrington situation... Not really a bust yet, but couldn't really elevate himself above other (younger) defensive prospects.

I know next to nothing about Clendening, but I'm curious how a defenseman can score 59 points in the AHL, and not be able to shoot or skate well. Something doesn't jive there...
- rival22

It is weird, he's a good passer and good on the PP. But yeah, he's not a good skater and he has a weird habit of standing still when he has the puck in his own zone or neutral zone. His shot is decent, but nothing great. But skating is his biggest issue, it's very hard for a PMD to be effective without being a good skater unless you have elite skill and hockey sense.

Soooo Bonino has almost-as-good traditional stats, decent bit better possession stats, and is less than 2/3 the price.

Plus the upgrade in draft pick, plus the prospect.

Holy smokes, this is almost Goligoski for Neal and Nisky territory.

- poopmouth

Bonino is argue has better traditional stats as Sutter. He had a plus 40 point season with good line mates in Anaheim and a plus 30 season with abysmal line mates in Vancouver. Sutter hovers around the 27 to 34 point territory. Bonino will have good line mates this season. The prediction is easy for me to make.

I think I'm officially team trade Kunitz. With all this forward depth, we can use Franson in a top 4 role much more than Kuntz in a middle 6 role. If we could get rid of Scuderi and sign Franson with those savings, that would be ideal, but I just don't see that happening. Kunitz would probably likely need to be moved next offseason to make room for Maatta, Plotnikov, and possibly Perron and Bennett extensions depending on how each perform this year. I'd hate seeing The Kun go from a sentimental standpoint, but it might be what's best for this team at this juncture

- Victoro311

I struggle with the thought of trading Kunitz. Still think he can have a bounce back year. I can't deny he looked like he lost his touch.

It's a good trade, but only marginally improves the team. That's my point. I didn't say the pens got fleeced, I said they aren't leaps and bounds better. Do you guys take everything out of context?
- flyerscup2011

Maybe if you were a fan of a different team, your comments would be better received. Bonino + Fehr is significantly better than Sutter and LaPierre. Plus they moved up from the 3rd to the 2nd in the draft (we're lacking picks), and they got another defensive prospect to replace Harrington. I think it more than marginally improves the team.

No, but many, like myself, identified Sutter as one of the biggest issues with the roster and the Pens not only fixed that, they crushed it. Imagine trading Lecavalier for Couturier and you would understand why we are so ecstatic.

Has Ruth cleaned up most of Shero's mess here or what?! Scuderi is basically the last piece of that mess. Kunitz and Dup's contracts may be a year too long, but I am completely fine with them (for now). Yeah we're missing "high talent" prospects but we have plenty of guys who will be effective bottom 6'ers. Sheary, Blueger and Simon have the chance to be top 6 eventually. Ruth even added back to our D prospects with Clendening. Erixon and Anderson are wild cards, but very cheap ones and are on 2 way deals, not positive Erixon is I can't remember.

We are finally trending the right way as a whole organization

He can't shoot at all..

15 points in 49 games is lighting up the AHL in your opinion?

- pker2theend

Clendenning has 23 goals and 100 assists for 123 points in 196 AHL games bub

Just getting Fehr out of the division would have been a win for us. He seems to always score against us. Hopefully he does that to the rest of the metro

Thanks for that... With the bolded part, you can get away with putting up points in the AHL where the game is so much slower.

Yeah that's what it reminded me of. I include Fehr in the deal as that wouldn't have happened without the trade. Obviously on a smaller level overall, but Clendening could always grow into his top 4 potential. He's moving into a perfect system for puck moving D-men.

Yup, but even if he doesn't pan out or only becomes a #7 NHL d-man you still win this trade. Bonino is a steal at his cap hit and you get a better pick.

I don't think Lecavalier for couturier is even remotely close in terms of value to Bonino and Sutter, but I get your point.

How is this Rutherford the same Rutherford that botched the Despres trade? Well Old Man Ruth has been regretful of the deal since day one saying that some in the organization were in love with Lovejoy and that he wouldn't do that trade if he could go back. There was a FO love affair with Sutter during the Shero era. Fitzgerald was openly defiant of the direction Rutherford was going. Fitzgerald leaves and a few days later we make two analytically outstanding moves. Hmmm... Wonder who the inhouse guy pushing for Lovejoy was...

Once again, I hope the door doesn't hit Fitzgerald on the ass on his way out.

His linemates in Ahaheim were typically Beleskey(Before Beleskey was good) and Palmieri.

He scored 22 goals and 49 point playing the 3rd and 4th lines for the Ducks. The Canucks mistakenly thought he would be a great 2nd line center and he just thrives better on lower lines.

I can assure you, he won't be a 1st or 2nd line center here

Straight up no, but including the draft pick exchanges, Clendening, and cap space to have Fehr and Bonino for multiple seasons instead of Sutter leaving in one year makes it much closer.

I for one am pretty excited by the fact that Bennett will have time with a center who is good at more than just shooting the puck, which was Sutter's one strength.

Me too. Kunitz could very well have a bounce back year and that would be a huge asset to us this season, but with all the top 9 forwards we have right now would a bounce back Kunitz be a bigger asset to us than Franson in the top 4? Especially when considering we'll have to make room for contract extensions next season. We will more than likely have to move Kunitz then, so why not now?

Maybe Ace (Sam Ventura) was the one that made this happen. Rutherford said Fehr and Bonino were targeted due to their analytics.
