He's like Staal in that regard. Just isn't a great passer. He's significantly weaker however.
- madmike71

Except J. Staal is one of the hardest players in the league to play against at his position and Sutter is softer than warm butter.

Sutter was a 2C behind Eric Staal for one season and still wasn't great by any means but it was the best he ever played in an NHL season.
- jfkst1

He will never be an everyday 2nd liner. It sounds as though that is what the canucks want him to be.

Fixed that for you. Vancouver can force it all they want.

That's what I mean. I still think Staal is overpaid, but he's a f'n horse....especially against the boards. I don't see Sutter ever getting 50 points because he's not a good set-up guy. Like I said yesterday... I can't ever remember thinking "wow, what a nice pass" when talking about Sutter. He's basically got that one shot.

If he can't win battles, shield the puck and pass well, he'll be very limited in this brand of the NHL.

Yep, Sutter can really only shoot. All his goals that I can remember looked the same. He skates into the zone and either shoots it, or tries peeling back and waiting for teammates, only to get knocked over and loose the puck. It's always one or the other, even when he enters the zone with teammates. I have never said "nice pass" or "nice play" when Sutter has the puck unless it was a SHG coming down the right side and sniping.

He reminds me of that kid who always thought he was the best player, but in reality he sucks and he's only playing because his dad is the coach.

#Pens acquire Nick Bonino, Adam Clendening & a 2nd round pick in ’16 for Brandon Sutter and a 3rd round pick in ’16. http://pens.pe/1IGrnZ3

Even if you're a Sutter supporter it's hard to make the case that Vancouver got the better player here. Ignoring advanced stats, two years ago Bonino scored 20 + goals and 40 + points in the same bottom 6 role as Sutter with meh line mates. This season he was played in a middle six role with awful line mates and scored one point shy of 40 points while having a down year due to poor usage. Yes, Sutter has two 20+ goal seasons on his resume, but Bonino also has one and scores more points because he is actually capable of facilitating offense for his line mates.

The reasons Bonino was traded has nothing to do with him as a player. Anaheim traded him as a package for Kesler in a no brainer move. No knock on Bonino, but when you've been missing a 2C for as long as Anaheim has and you can get Kesler for the package they did you do it. Bonino was traded by Van because Van is a poorly run organization that overvalued Sutter and was willing to shell out to get him, so JR was able to dictate the parameters of the trade.

I'm not saying they did only reviewing some of the things mentioned. As I also said, we say our good byes harshly but welcome warmly. . Besides why players get traded they get traded - that's just the point. I'm hoping Bonino goes great here I'm a Pens fan remember but I just don't see the point in trying to drive home an opinion that someone has & another doesn't. When we see next seasons stats & results is when we can say who did what. Doubt anyone here really knows anything close to what each team is doing. Let's hope we both get what we want because whether or not Sutter does anything in Vancouver means zero to us. I'm also very happy that JR got what we needed & didn't poop the bed again. Another big tick for JR!

Looks like Lovejob is on the outer - completely brushed on the Pens web site report on the days trades & purchases. D spots will be Tanger, Maatta, Cole & Scuds (yes it's confirmed until he is traded tomorrow ), & the remaining spots up for grabs between Pouliot, Dumo, Erixon & Clendening!

Lovejoy better stay. I like Lovejoy. I don't like how he arrived here, but I still dont want to get rid of him. He's right handed, can play top 4 if needed (not top pairing), good leader, and only costs $1M. He could still mesh well with Pouliot like they shows flashes last year.

And there is literally no reason to get rid of him while Scuderi is on the team.

Unless VAN makes the SCF and we meet them there.

I know, VAN is going the opposite direction and might not make the playoffs.

It was probably just a typo or oversight on who ever wrote the piece but it's on the Pens web site, so a little embarrassing for all concerned. It probably reads Lovejob not Scuderi in the authors mind.

Agreed. He looked good when he got here and was playing his role, not top pairing 25 minutes a night. Scuderi or Erixon are the ones who will be traded if it comes down to it, Erixon would have to clear waivers correct? Someone may pick him up, which would be a slight loss for us but we have other capable 7th dmen to call up in Anderson and Clendening.

The pure statistical likelihood of a Pit-Van SCF is 1:224. I think they'll be safe.

I left that open for comment!! Just in case a Nucks fan comes over. They are going to be an interesting team next season - I think they're hoping to be the Flames type who are going to uncover a couple of young guys & overachieve & Im hoping my man Sven B can get settled - I thought/hoped Sutter & Sven B may play with each other just not in Vancouver.

No, like I said, purely statistical. Obviously, Pittsburgh probably has a better than 1:14 shot to make the Finals and Vancouver probably has a worse than 1:16 shot.

Yep. I hate to keep dipping into the gospel of RW but I do agree that Sutter's only good plays were aesthetically pleasing. He only had 13 goals last year at even strength. The rest were shorthanded. While impressive, a forehand-to-backhand shorty on a breakaway is not sustainable offensive production.

We never saw him do anything else impressive. Never saw him shadowing the opposing teams star center and shutting them down. Never saw any Hornqvist type plays that were 100% hustle. Never saw an impressive check. Never saw a great set up pass to a linemate.

Agreed 100%. RW did not turn me into a Sutter hater either. I actually would defend him before last season and also into maybe around the 1/3 mark into last season. He never had the linemates is what I always thought. Come to eventually find out, Sutter is actually just that bad.

I can only remember one game last year he played a decent "shutdown" game on Stamkos when Stamkos didn't register a shot. Seemed like an off night for Stamkos, and the advanced statistics showed that Sutter really didn't do squat.

Speaking of squat, I have a real good feeling Sutter skips leg day. I mean what else is his excuse for getting pushed off the puck constantly by any player in the league? I honestly think Gibbons could knock him off the puck.

That's actually fantastic defence short handed.

The one time I'm aware he ever got assigned to a shut down role was against Tampa & he completely shut Stamkos down! I've said this before I'm not sure the team ever knew what role that 3rd line had. Score or shut down? Hopefully next season there is a clear game plan each game.
