Irwin likely a spare part playing the job of 7th Defensemen. You could see trotman with seids and krug could either fall back to 3rd pairing or be moved up for a bit to see how he handles it. Wishful thinking would either drop Chara to 2nd pair or spread the minutes out a little more over all three pairings.

Is everyone neglecting the fact that Irwin was a 19 point Defenseman with 60 games or less in the last two seasons. And was a + player both those years. Now I don't know much about his corsi, but his stats over the last two years, and even in 12-13 with 12 points in 38 games seem very respectable, and he deserves a chance to be that #4 puck mover to play with Seids. (Or possibly along Chara if Franson gets signed)

Checked Irwin in War-on-ice.com.

He is a almost completely neutral Corsi player, +0.01 Corsi. (50.01)

He is sheltered from the opposing teams best talent playing against mostly the third and fourth liners. Lowest among there starters, other than J. Scott, a goon.

And he is somewhat sheltered with starting most of his shifts in the offensive zone on most occasions. Coach seemed to give a greater weight in making sure he wasn't on the ice for top Two liners over zone starts.
-------------

This team, the Bs, sheltered every player other than Hamilton and Chara.

Even Seidenberg.........he started almost every one of his shifts in the D-zone but against 2-3 liners. CJ seemed to think he was a liability in the O-zone with the way he played him only in D zone...........crazy from what I've seen with the numbers.

Crazy to even consider using the advance numbers to see which of the Bs are going to be able to make the jump as they were given such easy assignments.

It's not just going to be like the ROOKS are going from AHL to the NHL they are also going do be asked to play first and second line players.......something NONE of them have done other than Chara and Seidenberg (and again, Clode hide him away too this last season.)

Doesn't it seem like a weird choice to move out a defenseman, to bring in another defenseman? Wouldn't it seem more logical to move someone like Kelly to free up cap space to add another defenseman since were already hurting on defense anyways? Just seems like we'd take one step back, and one step forward if we were to move out Seidenberg to bring in Franson. Unless the B's really think Seidenberg is about to fall off a cliff in terms of productivity... but then in that thinking, shouldn't they have shipped out Chara a few years ago?

wasnt his partner Hannan who basically was a glorified boat anchor. To put up any sort of positive stats while playing with him, thats impressive on its own. I think he could adopt to a larger role if paired with the right PMD

That doesn't matter. Only Corsi matters. Dougie Hamilton is the best defenseman ever. All hail Michael Stuart.

perfect, so you will join me in yesterdays twitter debate about how Rask isnt Elite based on timely saves and Crawford is better than him?

Corsi is the greatest! Advanced stats rule! Look all those World Series wins Oakland has! I mean look no further than the Red Sox the last 2 years. Carmine is just rolling these great players left and right!! WOOOO!

Actually if you look closer at the stats while jerking off into a coffee cup turned to a 45 degree angle and then land your shot .05 centimeters off the square root of the radius times pi...you'll see that clearly Drew Doughty is actually the better sax player.

Bear with me; I'm not sure of his D-partner and I honestly don't really care what that Corsi number is as long as it's not out in some extreme.

My BIG take away is that he wasn't playing the toughest competition. He was playing bottom 6 players and was making a majority of his starts in the O-zone.

So that likely means 1 of 2 things:
1- his coach did not think he was a best choose for a shut down D-man and decided to play him against lesser talented opposing lines all the while preferring him starts in the O-zone.

2- his coach was incorrect and he is better than thought and he could have handled the more talented players.

I tend to think option 1 is more likely. But, I could be wrong.
--------------

All in all, I think there is a rude awakening for anyone that thinks we can plop anyone into the "top pairing" with Chara or even the middle pairing with Seidenberg.

Everyone likes to guess that Trotman or Irwin or C. Miller or Morrow can handle top 4 and even top 2 time. (And with all these super awesome hockey expert scout types we have TWO of these guys that have not even been seen playing.)

The reality I'm trying to point out is TWO FOLD.
One, they are all ROOKIES (Irwin seems like the S.J. Version of Bart the journeyman),
Two, NONE of them have played against "elite" talent yet.

But, if everyone wants to assume two of the half dozen "question marks" will become the next Johnny Boychuck and the "improved version" of Dougie Hamilton then great! Can't wait to buy a new Sweeter!
