Yes it was!
If someone's value is a 2nd, and u pay a 1st...
It's overpaying AT THE TIME
Regardless of how that player works out

- jdfitz77

Just curious, how you know that no other team offered a first. Perhaps they did but couldn't take on Legwand, and Buffalo was able to.

Legwand could play a lesser leadership role for Buffalo

But if it works out as they intended, then it wasn't an overpayment was it?
- druryisclutch

At this point, that is a huge IF!!!!
I hope it does work.

Looking at teams with limited cap space and an influx of D the Canucks currently have 8 D men under contract. 2.8 under cap.

Wonder what it would take to get Luca Sbisa from them. 25. Left handed D man. 3.6 million for three years left?

If GMTM wants another LHD, I will list some names. I want to know what people think and what it would cost to get them.

Keith Yandle
Jack Johnson
Brandon Gormley
Mattias Ekholm
Jon Merrill
I know he is right handed but
Ryan Ellis

Was Dominik Hasek a steal from Chicago?
- druryisclutch

Not at the time
Of course the way it worked out it was

We are talking about 2 different things though

Value at the time of the trade...
And how the trade works out years later are 2 different things

Lehner will or won't work out, regardless of what we gave up for him
Do u get my point here?
We are looking at this in completely different ways

Like I said, if we traded a 5th, I'd say right NOW, that we stole him
But if he get hurt and never plays again, or just sucks... That doesn't change my opinion at that time

Jon Merrill, I believe plays for the Devils?!?!
If that is the case, we can swing a deal to get him, as the Devils need a lot of help everywhere!

Cbus isn't moving Johnson as they need help on D as it is.
Nashville is high on Ekholm, so no chance.

Why do I need to base it on what some other team MIGHT have offered?
That's a little too much speculation for me...

But let's say for example, the other offers were 5th round picks, & we have up a 4th to get him...
I don't consider that overpaying necessarily BC I think he's worth more than that
So even if a team offered TWO 1sts for him, I'd still say we overpaid
BC (IMO) a young goalie, with all his question marks (injury, last season struggles, etc) is DEFINITELY NOT worth a 1st... Esp in last year's draft

Btw...
I DONT HATE THE TRADE AT ALL
I'm just saying a 1st was overpayment

I totally get what you are saying and how you are looking at it, and I hope I am not coming across as argumentative. I just think it's way too early to judge if we overpaid. Who knows, his Uncle could have screwed him, or he could have helped him and honestly said, hey look, team x is offering me this, so if you want him you have to give me the first. No one really knows, or will probably ever know. I think we both can agree that we hope he turns into a stud and in 5 years we will revisit this and agree we got the better of the deal.

Why?I think he is going to be very average, if that, in the NHL and the Sabres have a lot of centers now and won't miss him.
- GilPerreault11

I guess I thought more highly of him than you
Also,
We have MANY other prospects I'd have rather moved
Fasching, Carrier, Karabacek, Cornel & Hurley come to mind

Compher would've at least been a solid player for us on the 3rd or 4th line, and played wing for us
Is giving up a 3rd liner a big deal?
No, not really
But a strong bottom6 can be the difference between last years rangers & pens
How big a role did Boston's 4th line play in their Cup win?

I'd just rather have moved other guys
Kid is Captain of Michigan for a reason
Plays hard, plays right, is talented, and can skate
I want guys like that on my team

From what I saw, that did happen. Edmonton wanted him and had a better offer than TMs original one. I don't have a link currently but I know it's been mentioned.

I'm not saying we won or lost the deal...
That to me is what will be determined in time

Just like how the Bruins reached for those guys they picked 14 & 15
They were rated MUCH lower
Now I give them credit for going after their guys they wanted
But isn't it a reach if u pick a guy at 15 & he's rated mid 2nd round?
Doesn't matter how he works out or not...
Was still a reach

Btw... Those were my exact feelings on EJ
Although I'm still hopeful he can fix his accuracy, BC we really could use a decent QB!

Yandle is not for sale yet. Would love to add him though.
Johnson. No.
Gormley. Meh. I wouldn't offer fair value.
Ekholm. I don't think he'll be anything better than McCabe. No point really.
Merrill. NJ isn't giving him up. But if they decided to, yes, I'd even overpay a hair.
Ellis. No.

I totally get it
Like I said... I don't hate this trade
Murray did what he had to do to get the guy he wanted
I still think a 1st is too much for a guy coming off the season Lehner had, both in performance & BC of injuries

He could def become our goalie the next 10yrs still
Like u said,
Murray knows him A LOT better than me, lol

You can't move prospects that don't have established value yet. You mention Fasching.. his value is higher than JT's. Everyone else you mentioned are long term projects that would otherwise be trade throw ins at this point. Of course you'd rather trade worthless assets. Everyone would. But buying a new TV with some magic beans and pocket lint doesn't happen.

you need 2 great top lines
a decent 3rd line center
solid top 4 d
above average goalie
decent special teams

that is the cup formula

I am all for more upgrades

if lehner ends up a top 8 goalie for the next 10 years and the sabres flip legwand for a second at the deadline, murray stole lehner

just showing the other side of the coin, I have my doubts on lehner and wish he got a better backup then johnson

- homiedclown

Maybe this will illustrate my point better...

Yes, in that scenario it ends up being a steal for us...
But wouldn't it be better if we got him for a 2nd,
And either got to keep Compher or draft Konecny?

Right NOW...
We don't KNOW that answer
But it certainly would be perceived better at the time

If they makes any sense... Lol

Anyways,
Let's just move on

Is there any free agent defenseman out there?
Franson?
Ehrhoff?
I'd take either on a short deal (2yrs, 3 max)
I'd be very surprised if Ehrhoff came back though

this Kesler contract, paying almost 7 mil per for a player til he turns 38, makes ROR deal look better already
