Let me put it another way...
If we gave up a 5th for him, wouldn't u say it was a steal?
Or would u still have to wait to see how he played here?

- jdfitz77

In this scenario, I actually would call it a steal because he has already proven he has NHL talent, and a 5th round pick rarely ever pans out in the NHL. So yes, he would have been a steal for a 5 but it is definitely too early to say they overpaid with a 1, because he is still young enough to turn into a top flight goalie.

No one wants to admit it!!
It was an overpayment.
That is all.
Now, I hope it was an overpayment that works, otherwise, oh well.......

- Sabresfan88

But if it works out as they intended, then it wasn't an overpayment was it?

Ennis and a 2016 2nd for Brent Burns.

*hides*

- sambarugh

if they think girgens is a top 6 guy, you can make the case for that trade IMO

kane, ror, eichel
moulson, reinhart, girgens
mcginn, larsson/legwand, gionata
foligno, larsson/legwand, deslaurers

burns, risto
bogo, pysyk
weber, colaiacovo
ruhwedel, donovan

if gorges can play, rotate weber and colaiacovo on the last pair and ship ruhwedel/donovan to rochester

Giving up a 1st in a deep draft for a young struggling goalie with injury concerns is absolutely an overpayment
Whether or not he works out doesn't change that IMO

I like that Murray is going after guys he really wants
In this particular case,
Reminds me of how "we" would say Darcy overvalued his players

- jdfitz77

if lehner ends up a top 8 goalie for the next 10 years and the sabres flip legwand for a second at the deadline, murray stole lehner

just showing the other side of the coin, I have my doubts on lehner and wish he got a better backup then johnson

Florida is going for the playoffs, idk tht they trade him now.

And look at the StL defense without JBo... No way they move him without getting defense back. We'd have to at least give up Pysyk +++
But I don't know if that would even work. They'd have to really like Pysyk.
I don't think us & StL are good trade partners

Franson is surprisingly still out there
He's prob the best available. I think he's RH though

- jdfitz77

Saying Florida is going to the playoffs is a stretch IMO. They have talent and will be in contention but no goal scorers. I don't see them as anything more than a 8-11 team. Same with the Sabres.

There's a pretty decent chance he does work out too
Like Goose said,
Murray obv knows this guy A LOT better than any of us
I'm very hopeful with him
He's had good success in this league at times & is still very young for a goalie
If he's our starter for the next 10years...
I wouldn't be surprised
One thing Ottawa seemed to do better than anyone was draft talented young goalies

But I would still say that at the time we overpaid (and took their salary dump)
If he works out,
I just won't care all that much that we overpaid
If he doesn't work out...
Depends on how Konecny does, BC that's who I'd have picked
Pretty tough to judge trades in hindsight though
Obv no one KNOWS how it'll all play out

I give Murray credit for going after the guys he wants
I think he's being a little too aggressive, but hey, I guess that's his style
There's a reason he's GM and not me after all
Hahaha

While we're all padding ourselves on the back here I was the ONLY one that said Compher was going to be dealt. How do ya like like?

I don't think he can play the left side though. There is something to the traditional L-R set up. Why pay big for someone to just play them out of position?

Sure, hindsight
For now though...

I like Lehner's upside, he's had success & is still very young
I would feel A LOT better if we had more talent in the pipeline though
Goalies are super unpredictable,
And ALL of our best guys struggled for big parts of last year

Yes it was!
If someone's value is a 2nd, and u pay a 1st...
It's overpaying AT THE TIME

He said they're going FOR the playoffs. Meaning, they're really going to make a push for them this year. And considering they weren't really that far off this past year, it's not a stretch. Their young guys are all a year older and more experienced.

Is there a book somewhere that says that Lehner was only worth a 2nd rounder?? I'd like to see this book of player values.

I said they're going FOR the playoffs
Meaning, I doubt they trade a solid vet like Soupy when they are trying to win now

Although, if u wanted me to bet one way or the other...
I think I would pick them to make it

Tampa, Detroit, Montreal (unless Price struggles)... Are pretty much a lock
Caps & Rangers are locks in the other division
That's 5
3 spots up for grabs IMO

A healthy Cbus is almost a lock for me

Pitt too... I don't like Kessel, but they didn't lose much in that deal, and I'm still trying to figure out how they missed last year anyways

I guess out of who's left...
I like Luongo, and a decent group of Vets complimenting all the good young talent they have

But I'm still not sold on NYi
I can def see how most would pick them over Florida

U don't have to be a smartass goose
U know there isn't

It's pretty damn obvious that a young, struggling, backup goalie with injury issues doesn't get traded for a 1st round pick

Please...
Name some times that's happened

Schneider was good for years
Look at what Bernier went for?
He was better than Lehner at the time (by quite a bit IMO)

If Lehner was coming off his stellar rookie season, that one thing
But last year was pretty bad

U gotta at least admit that

Looking at teams with limited cap space and an influx of D the Canucks currently have 8 D men under contract. 2.8 under cap.

Wonder what it would take to get Luca Sbisa from them. 25. Left handed D man. 3.6 million for three years left?

Why?I think he is going to be very average, if that, in the NHL and the Sabres have a lot of centers now and won't miss him.

Good point
I'm not sure if he can play the left side or not

He's a decent player though, so if we did sign him he could become a trade chip at the deadline for a team with an injury or in need of a vet defenseman

Maybe that's how we get our young LH defenseman?
It's kind of a stretch unless we add a pick/prospect
But teams get squirrelly at deadline time
Erat for Forsberg sticks out
Heck, I remember when Philly STOLE Coburn from Atlanta for an aging (almost out of the league) Zhitnik!
The Bruins sure seem like boneheads...
Maybe they're in contention & can be talked into something dumb
Subban for Franson +
Maaaaaybe?

But whose valuing him as a 2nd, you? Some other GM? Its like asking who would pay $500,000 for a baseball card? Well, I sure wouldn't, but someone else might place that value on it and even pay a million for it. It all depends on how that individual views it. And if GMTM thinks Lehner is going to be a top 5 goalie in the league in a few years, then yes, a #1 pick was definitely worth it.
