Actually, I stated earlier in the thread that suspending him would be setting a precedent that I don't think Gms want to go down. I think it needs to be made perfectly clear that what he did was unacceptable and won't be tolerated a second time.

Again, I wasn't really questioning your conclusion as much as I was questioning your reasoning. The whole "no one was hurt so it's not as bad" argument doesn't really fly.

I don't like living in what if's especially in a criminal situation. People like to say the worst could've happened therefore a player should be suspended because something bad could've happened. That's what I disagree with. He did something wrong but I look at the facts of the situation not the "oh someone could've gotten hurt" part of it

If i recall, Mark Bell got a 15 game suspension, 90 days in jail and enrolled in the substance abuse program when it was him.

Not too sure how comparable the situations are, but that's the most recent one that i can think of...

If I remember correctly Bob Probert has similar issues but his wasn't just drinking it involved cocaine. First offense was the NHL 30 day treatment. Then it went from there after each instance.

I really think the NHL will mandate him into the substance abuse program, he will do his 30 days before training camp and the rest will be up to the courts.

If he was a regular joe none of this would matter, we would never hear about it, he would pay his fine and get his breathalyzer in his car and call it a day.

The NHL and the Sabres should make a bigger deal out of it. I am not sure suspension is the way to go but heavy community service should be included such as speaking at schools and even starting a foundation.

Which pisses me off, because if that was you or I, We would be out on our ass.
- ImThatGuy

That's not entirely true. It all depends on the company and situation. A good friend of mine got a DWI and a bad one. He is an auditor for the state. He kept his job, he had to do a program to get his conditional license back and he still has the breath starter in his vehicle. But he was able to keep his job (a good paying one at that mind you)

Good post. The key is to balance the punitive response to his actions, while also giving him the chance to grow as a person and perhaps even help others as a result.

What does everyone make of the turning down the contract? Do you think it was because he was waiting on Chicago or simply because he doesn't want to play here.

Pretty sure that's what those of us arguing for punishments for him had in mind. Don't want to speak of others, but that's how I feel.

The act is despicable, the lack of harm means nothing to me. The added act of running away to try to escape responsibility for it makes it even worse.

Hopefully this will be the last post about this but it's not for you or I to decide what is punishable by suspension. I all along think he should be punished by a heavy fine and community service. Maybe speaking for schools or something. Suspension just seems like people wanting to throw the ax down on a first time offender and I for one am against it but ultimately what either of us say means jack squat because the NHL and Murray/Pegula will make the final choice.

prob waiting on CHI. There do seem like a lot of potential suitors for him: CHI, BUF, BOS, EDM, LA, DAL, so keep hopes low and maybe we'll be surprised

Agreed. He made a dumb choice (well, a few in fact), and now will have to suffer the consequences.

As long as he accepts responsibility and wears that moving forward though, there'll be a place for him in the league.

I'm just not keen on slaps on the wrist for first time offenders of crimes that had the potential of killing people. Theft? sure. but drunk driving is nowhere near an innocent sort of crime

I have idiots in my family with multiple DUIs, and I sure as hell hope they'd receive punishment for their crimes because of what extent of a crime it is. That includes their employer firing them or suspending them, first offense or not.

There are jerks on the roads down here who drive mopeds everywhere because you don't need a license for them, so every moped I see I figure is some drunk who lost their license, and I shake my head at how they're allowed to legally be back on the road...

Think you hit it on the head with the Chicago part, and their Sharp trade didn't exactly clear that up.

I enjoyed spending time in their forums, seeing all the outrageous trades they were expecting for him, and then seeing him and one of their top (some say THE top D-prospect they had) get moved out for relatively lackluster pieces (especially in comparison to some of the trade scenarios, wish I could remember them..)

What do you expect. It's the slowest season if the year for the NHL. This O'Riley crap has definitely caused an influx but let us have the Oduya talk in hopes of us getting a top 4LHD that we need so badly. Otherwise we'll be waiting till September to have anything of merit to discuss.

Hell, I saw some annoying antics (behind the play punches/dirty moves) by Ott when he was with Buffalo and I had hopes he would get discipline for it, so I'm all for punishment even of "my" own players.

And I agree that there's lots of room for this drunk driving mess to turn into positives (luckily) if he handles things right.

see above - waiting on CHI. If CHI can't make it work, hopefully he goes for the top $ because I don't think GMTM gets outbid here
