Simple truth is at this point very few can afford either...

Montreal is the wise guy choice and my favorite price shot for Sharp is Philly because of the irony involved.
Bickell is more of situation where they may have to move him to the West for half a ham sammy and a can of diet coke. - Al
I love the proposed returns on Bickell....StanBo would gladly take a used jockstrap for Bickell at this point |

Oh I caught it, a few times.
But it's more than that. Look at how the NHLers conduct themselves compared to players of the other leagues. Like night and day.
Keeps flooring me when I remember Hammer saying (paraphrasing of course), "I make a lot of money, I am happy right here". Niklas Hjalmarsson commenting shortly after signing his $20.5M / 5-year extension late summer of 2013. - blackhawk24
Hockey is a little unique in the fact that it's very rare for kids from poor homes to become great players. Getting good requires ice time, which isn't cheap, and we all know how expensive the equipment is. Most hockey players come from reasonably well to do families and therefore have a better understanding (or at least their parents do) of how to manage money. |

Bryan Bickell......the turd that keeps clogging Stan's toilet. My goodness.
My fear from the onset is being verified more and more with each day......NOBODY wants this guy. Nobody. IF they are willing to trade for him Bowman is gong to have eat some considerable money. For everyone saying burry him in Rockford, you save all of 925K doing that.
So if Stan can't deal Bickell.....has 2 guys patiently waiting for salary to be moved to sign on, then all signs point to Bowman swallowing his pride and taking a lesser return on Sharp's trade. In fact, he probably can't take ANY salary back unless Oduya and Kruger's combined AAV is slightly over 6.
The lesson here for Bowman moving forward is to make sure he has replacements in house, and doesn't over pay with AAV for guys who are 1 hit wonders. Jim Lehyritz was a helluva playoff performer, but I never recall anyone throwing huge money at him......... - SteveRain
I think when Bowman couldn't come to terms with Saad he has in fact learned a lesson and demonstrated it by moving him quickly and for close if not fair return. |

No way. He would hold out for a brand new jock strap. And one of those new ones with the built in Velcro for the socks. When you're ready to submit to his demands, you can find him in his office eating a bag of chips. |

Don't like being called out do you? I clearly said Im sure he has a nice chunck of change put away, but to estimate 20M of 23M saved is asinine! 30-40% of his earnings would have been taxed, another 5-10% to his agent and whatever else to escrow. As well as living at a high level costs money. When on the road Im sure the players aren't eating five dollar footlongs from subway. Say I've made 1M in the last 10 years of my career, is it realistic to expect me to have saved 700K?? I havent even seen that net. And as for endorsments... LOL, hes Johnny Oduya, not Crosby or Toews... I wouldn't think he has anymore endorsments than a guy like Paul Bisonette. Talk to you all tomorrow after JJ and his hurt ego give me a 24 hour ban. - Willaged
Sorry, I didn't feel "called out" until you got personal (above).
You responded, I responded back. What's wrong with this picture? And whose ego is hurt? I'm not allowed to respond?
I think it's reasonable to assume a guy who has two Stanley Cups and an Olympic silver medal has significantly more endorsements (especially in his home country) than a guy like Paul Bissonnette.
Kudos to Bissonnette on his clothing line. I wasn't aware of that in that I don't follow him or clothing lines. No sarcasm intended.
Back to my original point (before this turned into snark-fest):
Oduya's net worth is likely built on $20+ million in hockey earnings
Endorsements
Appearances
Investments
He's probably a very wealthy man.

This whole offseason has the feel of either the perfect caper or the beginning of a 2011-2012esque lull... Up until this week, I felt it was the former, but I am now leaning towards the latter and this thing blowing up in Stan's face. Hope I am wrong... |

Grabner would probably produce better here than NY... or he could be in Qs doghouse like Stalberg.
Not implausible. One would think Stan would be willing to take smaller salaries bakc because they can then be turned out more easily. |

JJ, good update And thank you. Erhoff wouldn't be a bad addition. I'm sure it has been stated, but two-way game isn't too bad and can load up a heavy shot on the PP. If Oduya, Kruger, and Erhoff are all possibilities for this year, then more than Sharp has to go. My guess Sharp and Crow go because we can't trade Bickell and it seems a Sharp and Versteeg salary dump would not be enough. |

what kind of framework would you suggest in a philly trade for sharp? - flyershockey
Anything that swallows Sharp's entire cap hit with no dead weight coming back.
I'm sure others could be more specific.
Philly intrigues me mainly becasue they can afford him I believe, and the irony involved with getting Sharp back 10 yrs after they gave him away.

If it has to be one or the other, I'd rather have Oduya than Ehrhoff, by a mile. But if Ehrhoff wants to sign with the Hawks for cheap, then it actually has to be for cheap. Unlike last season when Richards signed a one year deal @ $2M, I don't see how the Hawks can re-sign Oduya and Kruger and have enough for Ehrhoff unless Ehrhoff is willing to play for the amount that the ELC player that he replaces would make. And that's providing the Hawks can trade Sharp and Crawford or Bickell. |

Correct. No issue with Saad deal after taking time to think about it, initial reaction was worse.
However, I'm talking about Bickell. This is the black hole on this roster and affecting the cap. Hawks proved they don't need him in cup final. Bowman may have to swallow pride to dump him and either keep salary OR throw in a sweetner.
Point to my post was that when they signed Bickell after 2013 they didn't have ANYONE in the system who could replace him. That's where stan needs to learn his lesson when some of these role players start to hit next tier of salary requirements he needs to replace them internally so he can afford to pay his top guys, top dollars and keep this train moving towards championships. |

well played sir! IF Bickell is not movable, is is possible to be cap compliant with him still on the roster? Is health the biggest obstacle? Or is it more his massive cap hit and negligable impact on a hockey team? |

Half a sandwich for Bickell.........
I think Sharp would prefer Philly over Montreal. |
