Don't like being called out do you? I clearly said Im sure he has a nice chunck of change put away, but to estimate 20M of 23M saved is asinine! 30-40% of his earnings would have been taxed, another 5-10% to his agent and whatever else to escrow. As well as living at a high level costs money. When on the road Im sure the players aren't eating five dollar footlongs from subway. Say I've made 1M in the last 10 years of my career, is it realistic to expect me to have saved 700K?? I havent even seen that net. And as for endorsments... LOL, hes Johnny Oduya, not Crosby or Toews... I wouldn't think he has anymore endorsments than a guy like Paul Bisonette. Talk to you all tomorrow after JJ and his hurt ego give me a 24 hour ban.
- Willaged

Investments can increase his networth, when on the road players are given a per diem to eat and most pocket much of the money. The actual doallar value of what he has is irrelevant, provided he's not stupid with his money he has enough wealth to live comfortably for 3 lifetimes.

Agreed. But 20M is a gross over estimate.

a broader point is, to assume 15-20 mil in the bank with no shred of evidence to suggest such is everything jj rips other people for doing. oduya will be set for life without stupid investments, i dont think anyone disagrees with that.

I must remember to stop investing my money. I had no idea it was stupid.

I don't know, I was just suggesting how some/most players do with their earnings, plus unless its public knowledge, no one knows.....
Like someone said Bizz has a clothing line, so does OEL, anything is possible was my point to him.

Sure, but it's also fair to assume Oduya has banked millions. To think he only has $4-5 million left after $22 million over the last ten years or so—and that's just team salary, forgetting endorsements and appearances (which Paul Bissonette probably only did for car dealers at best)— is probably off.

Oh yeah, and then there's investment income.

Johnny Oduya is likely a wealthy man by the standard used by 99.9% of the world, and 99% of the US.

Music to my ears.

Then on the flip side, how could so many pro athletes just blow that kinda cash? Mind-numbing.

A few years back remember, the NFL was facing a potential lockout. There was word going around, not substantiated as far as I know, that upwards of 2/3rds of the total league of players would be facing financial hardships if a lockout occurred. Utterly amazing.

If JO comes back at what we view as a reduced rate, he should be commended by us fans, as a guy willing to take a lower salary for the fame of championships, just like Hammer and more recently just like Desi.

Kudos to any player who does that. For any team. In any league. At any time.

Just a question, but isn't VanRym. on the horizon? Would work with Cap for you guys, or is he another year away?

If you have HBO, watch the new show Ballers. That will show you exactly where the money goes and how. Give immature kids a bunch of money they've never had before and more often than not, it'll be gone real fast.

He has shown more than capable of playing on the 3rd pair in the NHL already...Stephen Johns is a pure monster on the right side though, so if the Hawks were able to re-sign Oduya and sign Erhoff, our D-Core would be outstanding. TVR is ready, but the D-Pairs I listed are ideal

Paul Bissonette has an ownership stake in a clothing line that makes him more money than hockey ever did.

Like the Wirtz family with commercial real estate and liquor distribution. Like Ilitch / Wings / Little Caesar. Like Snider / Flyers / Comcast.

I just found the Players Tribune a few days ago, and both stories have been really interesting. Thanks for the link to this one.

Solid d-man.

So that means salary coming back.

Jay also says Bickell is basically unmovable (not dissimilar to what I've been hearing).

Whether it's Ehrhoff and Solid D-Man X and Kruger, or Oduya and all of the above, I think Stanley would have to move another big salary(?)

- John Jaeckel

Solid dman meaning another $3 mill+ in salary probably means either no Oduya or no Kruger. But I can't see the sense in adding another $3 mill dman if Oduya were here-That would be a more expensive defense than last year.

Oh I caught it, a few times.

But it's more than that. Look at how the NHLers conduct themselves compared to players of the other leagues. Like night and day.

Keeps flooring me when I remember Hammer saying [paraphrasing of course], "I make a lot of money, I am happy right here". Niklas Hjalmarsson commenting shortly after signing his $20.5M / 5-year extension late summer of 2013.

I completely understand that. But it is to my understand that Oduya does not own any businesses. Just because Bizz/OEL have business ventures it doesn't mean every NHLer does. I know that Magic Johnson owns a baseball team now. Just because he owns a baseball team doesn't mean every ex NBA player owns a baseball team.

Al, please tell me your not suggesting in order to sweeten the pot for Sharp, we need to toss Kruger?

He's not taking a 40% pay cut. I'd say something in the $4M AAV range; 3-yrs / $12M.

There was an amazing Sports Illustrated article that outlined several players financial demises and poor investments. My favorite was the football player that invested I think over $500k in furniture that had inflatables attached to them incase a house was flooded the furniture would be salvaged.
