Yeah, that is a real solid deal for the Pens the next 2 years. Any D-man contributing in your starting 6 for under $1 million helps the cap situation a lot. Hopefully he is in the starting 6 and not sitting in favor of Scuderi or Lovejoy. - PensFan1103
If they do fail to salary dump scuderi, it'll be totally inexcusable for him to be anything other than the 7th d. i'd even be okay if he got more playing time than the typical 7th dman.
maybe playing 6 outta every 10ish games, giving each regular dman the occasional night off, and maybe even keeping himself sharp/fresh in the process. |

It actually was going to be Kunitz or Scuderi but both of them have Toronto on their No Trade Clause and neither would wave it, thus spaling went back the other way. - mmonana120
Kunitz was never involved according to a few sources Friedman being one of them and Dreger saying that shortly after the deal was made. |

I'd rather have Kessel at 6.8 and Pouliot moving forward than Kessel at 5.5 and Kapanen, assuming that Kap doesn't move in the scenario that Pouliot is moved. - Victoro311
I guess it's tomayto-tomahto. i'm just saying that there exists an amount of salary retention for Kessel that would have made trading a Pouliot worth it.
but it's moot. i was just taking a stab at the conditions of the "2.5 million retained" conversation that reportedly happened

I've said that multiple times. I don't fault Rutherford for not being able to move Scuderi since he has a laughably massive NTC, and don't really blame them for not buying him out since that would create about a mil cap hit in dead money for four years which doesn't sit well with me, but if he's a regular in our lineup and is being consistently played over Dumoulin solely because he has a big cap hit then I will be (frank)ing pissed. |

So lets look at our cap right now with Dumo resigned.
Crosby- 8.7
Kessel- 6.8
Perron 3.8
Plotnikov- 925k
Malkin- 9.5
Hornqvist- 4.25
Kunitz- 3.85
Sutter- 3.3
Dupuis- 3.75
Bennett- 1.5 (just an estimate)
Sundqvist- 700k
Wilson (just using him) - 655k
Total= 47.73
Letang- 7.5
Maatta- 894k
Cole- 2.1
Pouliot- 864k
Lovejoy- 1.1
Scuderi- 3.375
Total= 15.83
MAF- 5.75
Zakoff- 600k
Total= 6.350
TOTAL= 69.91
SALARY CAP= 71.4
CAP SPACE: 1.49
so we could take this team into cap and be okay cap wise. 1.49 million in cap space gives you a little wriggle room. ideally you can dump scuderi and get his 3.375 off the book and bring in Dumolin for 800k
still think we see one guy traded and another UFA added. |

I know you are just giving an estimate, but how in the hell is Bennett getting 1.5? That is a 600K raise for terrible play. |

I don't think it will take 1.5 to resign Bennett, which his injury history and the fact he's proved nothing in the NHL yet. I'd think he gets a 1 or 2 year deal around 1-1.2 M.
I assume you were just over estimating for the sake of your math, but Beau's got no leverage... If he gets 1.2 he has a damn good agent.

I don't see them not keeping Dumoulin at the NHL level. If they send him down to the AHL, he will need to clear waivers when the inevitable injury to one of our Dman will happen. No chance he clears waiver with a 2 years deal at 800k cap. Of course, they could always leave him in the AHL and re-call other players but he would be by far the better option down there for a recall. Also, I don't see the Pens paying him 800k to spend the season in the AHL.

Yeah the waver situation gives me hope that he'll actually play. Would hate it if he just wastes away in the press box |

I'm not saying he should be playing in all 82 games but if he gets routinely scratched in favor of Scuderi and/or Lovejoy, I will be pissed. |

They can send him down/recall him, but he will have to clear waivers. 1 way deal does not equal mean that he can't be moved around, rather than the salary he will be earning will be the same regardless of which level he plays. |

I would do it. If the plan is to play Beau on the 4th line and such, there is not much future for him here. I'd rather clear Scuds salary and take a 3rd and go with other options probably better suited for bottom 6 duty. Bennett will likely fall behind Sprong and maybe even Simon within a few years. |

He won't clear waivers so the move would be beyond stupid and Pens would look like complete idiots. It's not going to happen. |

Would Scuderi wave? Also what's more valuable to the team? A third and Scuderi's contract gone which will be off the books in two seasons anyways or can be bought out after this season to make space, or Bennett's potential? I'd say Bennett's potential. |

Yes, that's the point I was making in my reply to SuperHenderson13's comment. He wasn't including Dumoulin in his roster but the Pens will most likely have to if they don't want to lose him for nothing. Having 800k free cap space is not a good thing going into a season if past experience is worth anything. |

We have been waiting for Beau's potential to arrive for a while. He has more potential breaking his wrist than developing into a capable forward that makes an impact. |

Scuderi was probably smart and has a NTC similar to Kessel's, all teams that almost certainly wouldn't be interested in him in the first place.
The Pens can have a complete roster without making any more moves, however, they are gonna be right on the cap and will be susceptible to playing short handed again when injuries initially strike before LTIR on players has accumulated. Rutherford might risk it, but I would imagine he learned his lesson about that last year. |
