Not living in Canada, so I don't know these guys too much.
The few times I've heard Watters speak on Leafs related topics, he's been saying things that makes alot of sense though.
I feel people don't like him because he's been relatively critical on some things Leafs have done. He's been quite objective in his assessments though (at least in my view).

If though wizardry, voodoo or bullpoop we were to win the cup next year, his response would almost certainly be "well it took them (frank)ing long enough!".

I'm thinking Watters is just more knowledgeable in hockey than most people that were leading the Leafs organization the last 5years.
I think as well that Watters is a real Leafs fan with a genuine concern for the bad decisions made by Leafs' management.
Watters was always in favor of Leafs rebuilding through draft picks and not giving up 1st and second rounders (Kessel deal). This is the exact route current management is taking now.
