If our rebuild takes as long as the Oilers then we might as well extend their contracts. Plus the Oiler youth had Ryan Smyth, Hemsky, and Horcoff and that didn't work to well. - A_SteamingLombardi
Thing is the oilers had not one prospect when they went for their rebuild, like zero. We have 5 first round picks in the last 3 years and could have 3 for next season after dealing hamhuis and vrbata.
As I see it we are 3 years in to a rebuild. |

Who cares? On a rebuilding team your cap will be much lower than a team going for it. - mauryballstein

The year we drafted Horvat was the start.

He's not planning on trading them so the Canucks always have room for them.
The Canucks could always retain a big chunk of salary if they are trading for picks and prospects and it is at the tdl of their last season... or before if they are a rebuilding team with lots of youth and a few elc's.
perfect world scenario stuff maybe. |

I agree Jones is utica bound unless like I said there is an injury to a C or Vey absolutely poops the bed.
I don't think you will see Benning move any more vets just to bring in Virtanen or Grenier. Grenier will likely pass through waivers and he will get a chance later in the season and from everything I have seen and heard about Virtanen, he needs to become an elite player in Juniors before he makes the NHL. Give him time.... - belcherbd
I hope virtanen goes back too. I think Grenier would for sure get claimed. I hope he is the 13 forward and we move one more vet out here. |

He asked if hey had spoken to the agents... I know it's hard to follow a multi post thread... I'm trying my best to walk you kids through it but you keep walking into walls while you text and take selfies. Try and pay attention.

I had just said in an earlier post JB just says whatever to smooth stuff over.
'we’ll see how it plays out' is akin to - we have a plan, feck off if you think I'm going to tell you what it is. Watch and wait.
If the media doesn't think you are a cup contender in July, no need to give them fodder to pick apart.
I am hoping for more change, but I think we are at least headed in the right direction.
I should say, I have a smart phone or windows phone, but don't have a data plan. Just use it mostly as a phone, a little as a camera, to play crib if I am waiting somewhere or bored and to surf the web- wifi while bbqing.
Wifey has the data plan. and addiction to facebook, and she can have it. - hillbillydeluxe
I like it. That's the way to properly manage a team. You never fully reveal your cards. If people don't like it, it's too damn bad, because I don't know of any manager who has been successful and allowed full disclosure. That was actually one of my issues with Benning not so long ago - that he was being much too forthcoming with the media about his/team's plans going forward. It's all right if he provides some generalities but any specifics need to be held back. I hope that Benning mantains this philosophy in any future dealings with the media or otherwise.

That was what I put in the edit. I would do that anyway first or second line or what ever just because retaining 50% salary would allow us to get wayyy more of a return. I would do it with hamhuis and vrbata this TDL also. |

a buddy was telling me about some lottery winners. one ticket with at least these two guys sharing. good friends.
they win and collect and split it and end up arguing over who should pay for the shared limo and end up losing their friendship over it. nuts.
But yeah, the Canucks would eat as much as they had to for a tdl deal on expiring contracts that brought a good return. If you have to sell missing the playoffs, there better be an upside.
I am still not sure if the will trade none, both or just Vrbata if we are in a playoff spot at tdl... |

maybe you can still trade Vrbata if you are getting a lesser rental or prospect and another pick? tough decisions with making the playoffs as a goal. |

I think if you have to eat salary you're taking a bit of a step backwards. I understand that sometimes it's impossible to make a deal without retaining a portion of the player's salary but I just feel it's counter-intuitive to making the best deal available. If I'm Benning, I stay away from any deal involving this type of dynamic. I feel if you're a good manager, with good negotiating skills, you aren't going to need to sweeten the pot with salary retention. If that type of offer is proposed or on the table, I walk away.
Frankly, there haven't been that many trades (in the grand scheme of things) which have involved any significant type of salary retaining specifics. Of course, that was before the reality of the fairly static cap figure and the restrictions it puts on any sort of trade/deals. I'm sure we'll probably see more of these types of deals. But again, I hope it's not going to be Benning |

This seems realistic, definitely would be better at the TDL.
So far I'm a bit underwhelmed with some of the stuff JB is saying in the media. - Makita
I don't mean to have a go at you specifically, but can we please stop putting so much stock into what people say? Jesus Christ, everyone is a politician these days, even if they're not in politics. Their actions matter, but their words mean less than nothing. |

If the rebuild started when we drafted Horvat then you have to continue the rebuild and trade vets for picks and prospects, they will get their choice of contenders to go to. - A_SteamingLombardi
Like I was saying, they org still has the stated goal of making the playoffs. Can you do both? Rebuild and keep making it to the post season, early exits or not? We will see. Tough decisions. Making playoffs, playoff revenue, pleasing owner. Future success (even if owner can't see it).
Letting ufa's walk
Moving forward and not taking any steps back?
Can you do both? short term and long term?

I think the decisions have been made. Stated goals mean nothing, we do it every new years. We can't rebuild and keep making the playoffs, that's not rebuilding. Our defense this year is going to make us envious of last years crap, I don't see the defense scoring more than the 32 they got last year.
