It would be nice to see more success stories, where the athlete actually takes advantage of such a great chance at furthering their education. However, it's always going to be about the money, in the end. I think both parties exploit each other as it suits their agenda.
As to your question about why educators would look the other way, I think there are elements of each at work as you noted (revenues, prestige and advancement of the program as well as just outright greed). Because funds which are received from the sports programs usually also pay for scholastic funding as well, it's to the benefit of everyone not to rock the boat. And on an individual case basis, there's not much an athlete can do in terms of ensuring proper stewardship of the various scholarships.
But I understand where you are coming from. It's the NCAA that has all the power and they of course set the guidelines to their advantage. Still, the athletes get a great opportunity on several levels - getting pretty much nation -wide exposure in their sport as well as the educational elements. It's up to them to take advantage as concerns the latter.
And yes, you are a bleeding heart! lol - Zogg
I feel like a bleeding heart. Would often rather defend someone else before I would defend myself.
Anyway, thank you for the reply, thought I killed the whole thread there for a moment.
The main issue I have with the argument that the school and player both get something out of the relationship is the student/player isn't getting much out of the deal if they shouldn't be in university to begin with... If the system has failed them to begin with by passing them so they will be eligible to play sports through junior high and high school, and then the kid is in university and has no chance to keep up academically because they don't have the fundamentals... what did the kid get out of college if he doesn't turn pro? An interesting experience but what kind of job does he get with that?
Maybe these Universities should have some trades courses?
It is one thing for the universities to say the student athlete is an amateur athlete, but then you see the amount of money involved and realize this isn't like a little bottle drive or raffle draw to raise money for an athletic program. This is big time, big money. See the crowds and media attention. Television broadcast rights and partnerships with big business like Nike, Reebok, Gatorade, etc..
I would love to know how many of these student athletes would be admitted to these schools based on academic performance alone, ignoring athletic scholarship opportunities?

Maybe next year? Any talk of Lucic extending with the Kings?
Just watch, we land more grit and the league goes and reduces body contact and starts calling everything... - hillbillydeluxe

It's easy to complain about not trading Matthias at the TDL now, but let's not forget some of the same folks were ready to offer him a multi-year deal worth $3.5/season back at the deadline. I'd much rather him have walked for free than have him around at that salary for another 3 years. - golfingsince

Speaking of which, have you talked to Mrs Marwood about possibly becoming a mod? the thinking being, if she can keep you in line (no small feat, as is my understanding ) then this should be a piece of cake for her, no? |

I was banned last week. I don't think the powers that be would consider me a 'character player'. |

Thank you for that link.
Interesting. I guess when I think of college football, I think of the top 8%, I think that is 120 teams if I am reading the article correctly. Damn there must be a lot of schools in the states.
Anyway, the article raises just as many questions for me as it answers. I am not sure if they list all the revenue streams and if these revenue streams include all the tickets, concessions, tv rights, jersey and memorabilia sales, etc.
as one of the responses at the bottom notes, "How can you do a true profitability analysis of college athletics without addressing the FACT that college sports are partially a marketing expense. Games come with the hours of school plugging goodness, they drive sales of merchandise (walking billboards), and they keep your name relevant... "
If there wasn't money in some of these programs, the head coach wouldn't be making millions...
Anyway, I guess one of the points about the amateur athlete thing is I don't think it is as much about bribes and throwing games that the rules are there, I think it is more about the ncaa controlling revenue streams and not wanting to share. |

Maybe you should read that MacKenzie Stewart bio, "Good in the Room: how I suck is why they want me"?
tbh, I have no idea if this Stewart kid has any chance at making the jump to the pros, let alone as a forward rather than on defense. I hope he does or we end up moving him for a pick. |

So basically Shanihan, who will have 11 draft picks next year , gotten rid of his GM and overpriced players being moved. They also picked up a first round pick this year . - VANTEL
The leafs have finally got their poop together. That franchise has been one of the worst in pro sports for 30-40 years. The fans deserve better. |

Vey, Sven & Bo will need to shoulder that responsibility. Vrbata won't be happy if he's on the 2nd line again. - VanHockeyGuy
vey will be in the minors where he belongs hopefully |

I can barely remember just going through the cupboard and thinking savoury and look, curry powder, mmmmmh. I have forgotten the curry powder and it is still good, but I think the curry powder is what makes it great. Liberal sprinklings of everything you like. |
