The dollar went down with the oil prices, over-supply on the world market....I don't think Harper controls that?

And no I'm not a big political guy.

Bad trade but all franchises have those once in a while.

Remember the Brett Hull trade?

Or how about when the flames let Martin St. Louis walk for nothing?

Gillis wasnt 100% in the dark on the risk he was taking right before the new CBA was going to be battled over. There was a reason 30 teams were not laying out those kind of structured contracts. Gillis/Gillman gambled and lost is what happened.
- boonerbuck

Wondering if FA played any part in that contract negotiation beyond signing off on it?

Everyone loves laughing at this franchise. but thinking about their own mis-doings flies right over their head.

Markstrom could very well end up being a better goalie than Luongo.

Carol nailed it with JB and his asset management. Matthias could have netted a draft pick.

At this point its likely Markstrom won't even play as many games as Luongo has won, but he could end up being the better goalie for a season or two, near the end of Lu's contract...

By the mid point in the season the management team should already be evaluating who they want to keep through the following season, instead of waiting until the end of the season to have those meetings. But, it was everyone's first year on the job, so hopefully they learned a lesson, and can be more proactive moving forward.

So true. I wish those guys would stick around and take some abuse.

I'm just waiting for Nucker to come out swinging.

He gambled and lost. I think we would've all teared him apart for trading one of our bigger forwards before the playoffs, knowing that the rules/style changes in the postseason. For that reason I can't blame him, you got to give yourself the best chance once you're in and Matthias has more of a playoff body than someone like Vey

Good thing is we don't need to worry about "playoffs" for the near future!

Meh. We win every time with Courtnall for Kordic. Wait...did I say "win"?
Sorry. Nevermind.

Luongo was younger than Markstrom when he was leading the league in shots on for a number of seasons.

Do we even know if JB tried to get a pick for him or not? We don't.

I think he did, just to see the value. But I don't think he pursued it very far, as the team was in good position to make the playoffs and figured to need a bigger body to have a chance to advance in the west

Yeah, that was kind of my point, and I think Doc was probably being a little cheeky when he suggested Markstrom could end up being better...

i'll agree that it was a gamble but there were plenty of teams that did it. njd with kovalchuk (which was the straw that broke the camel's back.) chicago with keith and hossa. detroit with franzen and zetterberg. tampa with lecavalier. philly with carter and richards.

This has ticked me off since the rules were changed. Not sure why Aquilini didn't fight this to the bitter end. It's his team getting screwed for this and if Luongo retires early, it's his money paying part of the penalty for quite a few years. For a guy who everyone says is desperate for two playoff games a year, he sure let the league screw him out of millions without much of a fight.

Considering what Calgary did to the Canucks, we would have blamed Bennington for trading Mathias and would have seen that as part of the reason the team was run. In other words, hard for the GM to win in this city.

Matthias is just another player who simply does not fit into the Canucks' future. The leafs can offer him a slightly larger role than the Canucks as we are looking to get Horvat some extra time out there. Just like the Canucks, the Leafs organization is looking to pick up roster players to hold a spot while they rebuild.
