We are still a fringe team. No arguments.
Just wondering, if we don't make the playoffs could both the Kings and Sharks get in? Western conference is getting tight.
Was just thinking, when you said they weren't a bad team, there are less and less bad teams in the west. Really just Arizona if everyone else is improving or status quo. - hillbillydeluxe
Ya lots of good teams in the West, but it's not like we didn't have our time at the top. Over the past ten year I think only the Sharks have won more than the Canucks? Don't quote me on that though, I just think I read something to that affect?
While the Canucks have been winning, the others have been losing and getting better, that's how it works. If Nonis and Gillis had been able to draft well, like the Sharks have, we wouldn't be in the position we're in.
There'd be a wave of kids coming behind Henrik and Daniel much like Pavelski and Couture are in San Jose.
West is going to be tight though!! |

I was over at HF Boards reading some of the kids over there, I don't comment but just read. Holy (frank) the kids that have never experienced losing are jumping off the wagon like crazy. A lot like that Nucker kid - LeftCoaster

Overall, I think the moves are in the write direction. As a general rule, I expect the 15/16 play of the acquired to be better than the 15/16 play of the departed as shown below.
When looking at those that remain from 13/14, I expect them to be generally a stronger group in 15/16 than they were in 13/14. Mind you, how could 13/14 been worse for Sedins and Edler. Regardless, the top 2 forwards and top 2 D should all have stronger years than 13/14, despite 3 of them being farther from their prime.
Acquired: Departed:
Bo Horvat > Ryan Kesler
Radim Vrbata > Zack Kassian
Nick Bonino = Mike Santorelli
Linden Vey < Brad Richardson
Ronalds Kenins > David Booth
Brandon Prust > Tom Sestito
Derek Dorsett = Shawn Matthias
Prospect > Zac Dalpe
Prospect > Jordan Schroeder
Luca Sbisa = Jason Garrison
Matt Bartkowski = Kevin Bieksa
Adam Clendening = Ryan Stanton
Ryan Miller = Eddie Lack
15/16 13/14
Henrik Sedin > Henrik Sedin
Daniel Sedin > Daniel Sedin
Chris Higgins < Chris Higgins
Jannik Hansen < Jannik Hansen
Alex Burrows < Alex Burrows
Alex Edler > Alex Edler
Dan Hamhuis < Dan Hamhuis
Chris Tanev > Chris Tanev
Yannick Weber > Yannick Weber
Frank Corrado > Frank Corrado
Jacob Markstrom > Jacob Markstrom
There's no way anyone with sense can compare Sbisa to Garrisson... Garrisson is a solid, solid top 4 player. Defensively sound and can provide offense when needed... |

Totally.
Some of the 'fans' of this team are too much.
Never happy, always second-guessing and complaining.
I find it tiresome and usually just scroll past the posturing where people make statements of fact based upon conjecture.
Like anyone here knows for certain the inner-working of Canucks management and who sided where with certain trades/signings/firings, etc.
This site is much more fun when people are posting suggested trades/signings/lineups.

I get from reading your article that your crediting Benning with Horvat & Kenins? I know you can't be but it slants that way & imply's such. As I know your well aware, both were acquired by Benning's predecessor.
I'm a 30; 1981, plus year Canucks season ticket holder & not even remotely impressed with Benning's, signings; with the exception of Vrbata. When looking at UFA's a year ago he was the player I hoped they would target & a fabulous signing, trades & still to early to judge his draft record but he's moved out a ton of picks in his 1st 13 months on the job. A 2014 2nd; Vey, acquired from TB for Garrison; brutal trade. 2015 2nd; Baertschi, & 3rd; went to Anh in the Kesler trade, & 2016 2nd for Pedan from NYI. Hard to grade his draft results when he keeps moving his best picks. That doesn't bode well as few players drafted after the 2nd round so much as see a cup of coffee in the NHL. We need to give that time though.
Not a single trade made yet by Benning where I'm happy with the return for what was given up & I hate the Miller signing. I hated it then & hate it even more now. Sbisa? Thank god he hits & blocks shots because he's a train wreck & now a significantly over paid 1. As I watched him over commit & turn pucks over constantly against Calgary in the playoffs I was left shacking my head. People think Bieksa was bad. He had the misfortune to have to carry this liability. In 2 of games I watched against Calgary in the playoffs I tracked turn overs with a buddy. I had 9 he had 13. NHL.com had 1? You have to love subjective stats compiled by NHL officials that live in the market they work!
This last season, 2014-15 & 1/2 the prior 2013-14; 2nd 1/2 of the Torts season, was the worst scenario for moving my unused tickets in 25 years. I couldn't give all my tickets away to many games; people just had reasons to say no; shocking, & the $ collected on the games people wanted to see, the Pittsburgh's, Montreal's, etc of the world were sold at a significant discount to previous seasons.
This screams problems to me, as it shows apathy by fans towards the Canucks & it's going to get significantly worse before it gets better. I had hoped things would improve under Benning but so far it's quite ugly as to how this is shaping up moving forward. I hope I'm wrong. I can except a rebuild, retooling, transitioning what have you but asset management has been terrible. Benning hasn't maximized his assets well. In fact it's been brutal. He's moving assets at the wrong times to maximize there value & that's his job. Make a choice, are we rebuilding or not & if we are, which is obvious to all then move assets when their at their best value. That being the trade deadline in most instances.
Management didn't want to let go of playoff aspirations. Now we have a team that hasn't got a hope of making next seasons playoffs & may well be the 2nd worst team on paper in the Western conference & will be spending virtually to the cap. If you want to be bad, just be bad but don't make me pay huge money to watch, Burrows, Higgins, Hansen, Dorsett, Prust & Miller. Other than the Sedin's & Vrbata this may be the worst group of forwards in the NHL & Miller wasn't worth any where near 6 million per for 3 years.
Benning's accomplishments to date? In my opinion & unmitigated disaster so far. |

Good hockey deal I'd say? I think the Blues were just looking for change. Looks as though the value of players just isn't what it used to be. Teams are showing some restraint. |

Sekeres on 1040 said he spoke with Gilman in private after the Sbisa/Dorsett signings, and Gillman didn't want anything to do with those signings. Didn't even want to talk about it. - Nucker101

Or realize that with the dollar dropping daily against the US dollar that the cap might start to drop as well in the next year or more. Buckle up gentlemen, the ride is getting bumpier by the minute. |

Funny that you should bring up the late and unlamented Fedor Fedorov, he was knocked out after practice in Manitoba by Kevin Bieksa because he was such a d!ck. - DariusKnight
You knock a team mate out in public for being a Richard then you are nothing but a self centered loser. Bieksa always put himself first. He'd do nothing when the Sedins would get run headfirst into the boards or knocked out with an elbow but you slash him in the pads and he'll get even right away or drop the gloves and pummel you.
