Nylander and Kapanen are gonna light it up together, if he's Kapanen is the prospect he's been made out to be.

Not the hugest fan of the trade.

Kind of unsure about the condition on the pick... Do we give up a 2nd in 2017 if they miss the playoffs both years?

- Schenn-Sational!

The more I think about it, Gluck, the more I'm starting to realize this is close to what we were going to get in any deal. We were so limited in options and there were so many negative factors.

No chance PIT misses the playoffs two years in a row

Have you forgotten what team we follow? They should be called the Murphy's Law Maple Leafs. Whatever can go wrong..........will.

Kapanen's already 6', 180 lbs and he was one of the youngest players in the 2014 draft. His skill in comparison to Nylander remains to be seen, but it's supposed to be in the same ballpark.

The trio of Marner, Nylander and Kapanen is something the Leafs cupboards have not seen in a while. Add in Rielly, JVR, and Kadri, plus the picks over the next few years. I'm not saying this will work, but you can see something that looks eerily similar to a plan.

think sportsnet had it typed in wrong, don't think the leafs dealt there own 2nd, but pens get there 2nd back (from winnik deal)... leafs never endanger there own 2016 2nd.

if the pens fail to make playoffs once, pitts 1st, and leafs 2nd in 2017 swap.

if the pens fail to make playoffs twice, leafs just get a 2nd, lose nothing, kessel continues on as a coach killer.

The display of lack of insight by some on here (re Kessel trade return) is quite something...
When Leafs only have 8 teams to work with because of an NTC, and most of those teams are cap ceiling teams, it's quite remarkable to pull off such a good deal as they did.

Just a heads up for the 'complain crew' re a possible Phaneuf trade return:

Phaneuf: 7million - 12 team NTC.
My personal guess on teams on NTC:
- LA: less than 4m in capspace (deducting Voynov's salary, it's 8mllion), need to resign at least 1fw, 1 d. Voynov trial 6th of July - I don't expect him to ever to play in NHL again, but if found guilty, it will be easier for Kings to make a trade (if not, Voynov first needs to confirm he'll go back to Russia).
- Ana: 19million in capspace, need for another d-man. Very possible.
- SJ: Signed Martin and less than 5m capspace: x
- Det: Signed Green, have 7 d-men signed, about 5mln capspace: x
- NYR: 7 d-men signed, need to add fw. Unless Yandle gets traded, no chance.
- Chi: need at least 2 nhl d-men signed. problem is they have only a bit over 1m capspace. Would be possible, but only if Sharp + Bickell and a good prospect come back, probably not something Chi will do. Would probably like Leafs to retain salary as well.
- Col: signed Beauchemin, added Zadorov. x
- Phi: Very possible. Need a good NHL d-men. Maybe if Ehrhoff, Franson, Odoya don't go to Phi, might be a feasible option. RJ Umberger / Lecavallier would need to come back and/or salary retained. Simmonds/Couturier possible return. Schenn and Phaneuf back on same team would be a nice touch.
- Pit: no cap.
- TB: no cap, no need for d.
- Mtl: no need for d.
- Dal: possible, but Stars need to address fw first and have about 10m.

Even if some teams (Dal / Mtl) would not be on his list, and other yes (Carolina, Ott, NYI?) for other teams same reasoning counts. EDIT: Probably Boston would be on the list, would not be surprised if there are talks between Bos and Tor on Phaneuf.

Phaneuf prob won't be dealt until Ehrhoff, Franson, Odoya have signed with other teams.

At this point, there are only about 4-5 possible teams from a NTC to work with.
Chi and LA are longshots due to cap restrictions.
That leaves ANA and PHI as 'real options'.
If there are only 2 teams you can work with, very difficult to negotiate 'fair return'.

My guess for Phaneuf would be Anaheim (close to LA, so good for Ms Phaneuf as well).

Possible return:

Phaneuf (1million retained)

Nice breakdown.... just don't see Ducks dealing Gibson for nearly anything.
if anything maybe Nick Ritchie instead.

If Phaneuf is dealt, see it being near trade deadline, I think Babcock wants to work with him, where he was okay not trying to fix phat phil.

Leafs should try and get him though - Ducks went with Andersen who is doing great and signed Khudobin. If there is a time to get Gibson, it is now. With Vasilevskiy one of two goalies Leafs should try to get in my opinion. 3-4 years ago, Bobrovskiy was in same situation as Gibson (possible very good starting goalie with (relative) low value at time, potential to develop into elite).

Kapanen is STILL just 18 years old. 4,3,7-11 total AHL games.

Marlies are gonna be a force.

Nylander,Kapanen,Leivo,Hyman,Bailey,Brown,Leipsic,Gauthier,Verhaeghe up front.

yes, we're stocking the cupboards nicely. We have 11 picks accumulated for next year and can also flip Arcobello, Parenteau, Polak and Spaling at the trade deadline as they're pending UFAs. Finally doing it right. Oh and still 14mil in cap space. I don't think the future has looked brighter

Yeah, i'm excited for him and the Pens 1st (most likely). I thought the Leafs did very well on the Kessel deal. Harrington is an interesting hold over. Hopefully his value increases while playing under Babcock

Pretty clearly stated in the blog. If Pens miss both years, Leafs get their 2017 2nd, no 1st, but leafs don't give any picks

This... And people female doging it's a late 1st... That pick, if leafs get it, will be most likely be 15-20. I don't think kessel makes them a cup contender at all. But I do think they are a playoff team.

I think Kessel will score 50 goals (15+ on the PP already) with Crosby as his C.
I do agree however that Pitts might not be a contender with this roster; I never liked Fleury and their D lacks depth.
If Pitts does not run into injury problems, they will reach semi-finals in conference for sure though. If they have bad luck with injuries again, *just* 1st round playoffs.

Oh I agree.
I'm one of the only ones here that holds the opinion that Leafs got a max return in the trade.
Now the 2nd part of 'salute-gate' needs to go.
+ Lupul and maybe Bozak.

My only issue is retaining salary. If we didnt do that I think we got fair value.

But we gave them Phil Kessel at a cap hit of 6.8mil. I think the deal should have been sweetened due to that cap value.

Regardless, he is gone, addition by subtraction in the sense that we are a bottom three team right now.

I honestly didn't think the Leafs would have to keep salary when trading Phil Kessel.
