Honestly, there's no sense in worrying about winning a lottery. Get another top 5 and it'll help.

Take solace in what we have and where we're headed. A big win in the Mathews department. We can pretend we just turned the fifth overall pick into a 2nd overall or 1st overall.
- mykokes

What's next year's draft like outside of Mathews? I assume the leafs pick Alex DeBrincnat next year

How they gonna get one? They just traded their best asset for a playoff protected 1st.

Leafs need to start accumulating 1st round picks and prospects.

Send Dion packing at the trade deadline.

It would be nice to have 3 or 4 first rounders going into the draft.

Start? We've been accumalating since the deadline dude.

They've already started.

They've beefed-up their prospect pool so much in the last week.

Looks to be another solid draft. Solid top 10. Matthews, Puljujarvi, Brown and Chychrun could all be stars.

Eh. I don't see why we had to eat any.

Phil Kessel is so much better than that bs media claims.

- RogerRoeper

Agreed, but I think the negatives going into any negotiations, including lack of options, made it really hard for that to happen I feel the return was decent for everything we were up against.

This move was rushed. If this is all the market was willing to offer now, you have to hold onto Kessel. This is terrible asset management by the leafs. I am not upset that the leafs traded him. I am upset that they didn't even get one of the top two prospects in a completely garbage system. I am upset that the leafs couldn't even land a clean first rounder. Not only is it conditional, but if we get it, we have to send them a second round pick in return.

And don't even get me started on salary retention. When you are trading one of the premier point producing forwards in the league, who is in his prime, there is absolutely no reason to be retaining salary. ESPECIALLY when you look at the quality of the return.

The leafs should have held onto Kessel until there were no more marquee forwards left on the market OR waited until the deadline. There was absolutely no reason to get this trade done today and if Pittsburgh really wanted Kessel, they could have ponied up.

- mycokes

That's an option, but there's no guarantee a better deal would have developed down the line. What if Kessel had another bad year?

Cut ties, take what you can get and move on. The same people complaining about the return are the same ones who would have female doged if he wasn't traded today.

According to most sources, Harrington has a ceiling of a number 4, but most likely a 5-6... That is now according to futures the best d prospect they have?...

Kessel will make his debut against Seguin. They need to fight on the first shift then hug it out and have a laugh in the box. Any chance you guys wanna eat about 2 mil on Phanuef and trade him here

Holy poop. Can this team do anything right? Getting tired of it. Seriously? That's what you pull in for an elite player? A late 1st rounder, and a bunch of 3rd liners. Pathetic. Really couldn't at least get one of Maata or Pouliot? Couldn't wait for one season under Babcock, build up his trade value and actually trade him when he doesn't have his one bad season. He's going to end up potting 50 goals, and become even better then he is. Seriously pathetic, all for trading the guy, but come on with that return. Martin Jones, a backup goaltender got a better return for Christ sakes. And they retain salary on top it all, seriously pathetic. They managed to lower the value of all the other players on the Leafs by doing this, set the bar real low. My god.

Not likely a top pairing.
