That was the BEST offer on the table. That's his value folks. Deal with it!

Id rather have Kessel than that package. I never felt he needed to go.

As per @TSNBobMcKenzie, Penguins trade Spaling, Kapanen, Harrington and two picks to Leafs for Kessel and two other contracts...

I bet one is Robidas.

That's why you don't trade star players. You never get fair value.

Look at Seguin, Thornton, etc.

The complete lack of talent outside of a few players is what killed them.

all the guys saying 'this is an awful deal' are proving my point that there is no patience for a 'proper rebuild'.

heck, i'm one of the first ones on here to state that leafs should not do a 'full rebuild' going forward (several reasons) and I think it's a great trade.
ONLY 1.2mln (still 4.1mln left after Clarkson trade) and getting back a 1st, 2nd and first for Kessel... + apparently they resigned a proper replacement in Parenteau (again, his adv stats were quite good despite him being bought out).

was quite clear this was going this way.

now cue phaneuf traded with another 1-1.5mln retained

PIT would like to re-acquire the 2nd rounder in 2016 it traded for Daniel Winnik. TOR may take a contract to help Kessel deal get done.

- gravyface

Well it will suck for you guys for a couple years. But at least you guys will comitt to rebuild. It's sucked for us but when it's over it will be exciting for you again. Always better in arena when buff AND Toronto are good.

Length of kessel's contract really hurt you guys.

1.2 mil retained on kessel
- cheffrancesco

Dear Roger.

It appears you were not correct in saying the Leafs would not need to retain any salary.

Best of luck next time.

Kapanen, Harrington, Spaling, 1st rounder + unspecified draft pick coming Leafs way.

TSN panel basically saying it's a slam dunk for the Leafs.

Penguins need to win now, prospect cupboard is almost bare.

I can handle that if we haven't yet heard the full return the leafs got. If it ends up as

TO PIT
Kessel (-1.2mil)

TO TOR
Kapanen
Harrington
1st round pick 2016

that is an absolutely awful trade by the leafs. If that is all they could have got for Kessel they needed to keep him.

- mycokes

I thought TOR was also sending a 2nd rd pick?

Meh. I disagree. Time to start with a new core which will bring you much farther than this one could.
I've been telling you for years to get ride of Kessel and Phaneuf, won't change my mind today.

I doubt it, too much cap. It's probably two minor league contracts near league minimum to clear contract # space for Leafs.

Bad trade for the Leafs but certainly not crippling. The 1st is nice but most likely low in the 20 range. Kapanen seems very good but that Dman looks okay. Retaining 1 mil for 7 years sucks but big whoop it's not going to prevent them from doing anything.

What people need to realize is that Phil had a very restrictive NTC and the Leafs weren't prepared to play chicken for 2 months to see if Phil and his agent would expand it.

True but the Leafs obviously want to move on. They must really feel like Kessel is not part of the solution of bringing a winner. Did they win the trade? Maybe not, but who cares? It's not about winning trades it's about making moves to get where you want to go. Wherever that is 4-5 yrs down the road, this gets you closer to that than retaining Phil does.

What did you think we were going to get? We got 2 top end prospects and a first rounder........ what exactly did you think a trade was going to consist of for a rebuilding team?
