i honestly don't know. i think the pens window has closed significantly, despite the likes of crosby, malkin and now kessel. maybe i'm wrong. - hammarby31
You see how few mistakes you have to make to go from a perennial contender to 2 of 3 yrs out of the playoffs. You can still have two or three great players up front and fall all over yourself.
Toronto and the Pens are still dealing players to make the cap work. Spalling for a pick maybe. |

And another 5.75 in Fleury. Gonna be interesting. They D could be a big problem, and they haven't fixed their bottom 6 depth yet. - wolfhounds
they have to be moving another contract I would think. |

Man.. Toronto had to do all that for that return?
You'd almost think that the Penguins didn't want Kessel and Toronto just had to trade him there. - MikesPillBottle
there has to be more coming from Pitt.....right? |

As per @TSNBobMcKenzie, Penguins trade Spaling, Kapanen, Harrington and two picks to Leafs for Kessel and two other contracts... |

Problem for Toronto is that Pittsburgh were likely the only team strongly interested in Kessel. |

Kessel might end up being a redundancy in Pitt. He's a top end talent but it seems like Pitt needed forward depth more. If Kessel can put up 40 goals next to Malkin for $8 million next year then Pitt is in a worse place than when they were paying James Neal $5 mil to do the same thing.
It might be good for them if they played Kessel with their 3rd liners in a creator role, but they'll probably just end up planting him next to Malkin or Crosby.
It's gonna suck to have Kessel working against us next year, but in the big picture I think this is a bad thing for the Penguins. Unless they trade for a 1st next year, the Pens will go 4 straight drafts and have no 1st round prospects to show for it. That's devastating for their future. Their last 1st round pick was Olli Maata in 2012, so thank god they like to throw their 1sts away. |

does eating the contract also mean eating cap space? - nastyflyergirl
Yes, they cover that % of the cap hit |

Makes you wonder what sort of ball-ravaging venereal diseases Kessel has that made Toronto so desperate to get rid of him. |

Think it's a great trade for the Leafs -- 1st + Kapanen (1st) + a decent D prospect... that's a lot to get back for anybody, must less a guy who's a cancer AND an albatross. |
