So why are we having the same problems year after year? - manvanfan
I don't think we have had the same problems for 20 years. Remember after Kirk McLean was moved how many years we had horrible GT's,,, that was our main concern back then and it shifted with the Bert for Luongo trade.
We needed defense and toughness in the line up and we got Jovo for many years of service.
We needed a top line and we got Bert and Naslund with those trades.
If you step back and look at it... those trades solved current problems. Our problems have not always been the same unless the problem you speak of is not winning the Stanley Cup... then everyone would agree with you.

So if the Canucks aren't good this year we will be able to flip bieksa, hamhuis and vrbata at the TDL and load up on picks. The. You have the ammunition, ala Calgary this year, to trade around and bring in a player or add a UFA piece with the cap space.
Basically we are one year away from the retool. The only thing is that you know we are gonna try and make the playoffs as we want our prospects getting that lesson (not a bad idea really).
Either way things don't look so bad. I'd still be scared if I was an oiler fan. Talbot will be ruined |

The Canucks have pulled off plenty of deals in the past where they made out extremely well. In recent years we haven't traded a person of any value, outside of Kesler who had the constraints of a full NTC and one team to which Benning had to deal with, to get a valued return from.
Linden was traded for Bertuzzi, McCabe and Ruutu - good hall.
Bertuzzi was traded for Luongo - good haul.
Bure was traded for Ed Jovanovski, Dave Gagner, Mike Brown, Kevin Weeks and a first-round pick - good haul.
Stojanov was traded for Naslund - good haul. - LeftCoaster
Peca for Mogilny was pretty good. He scored 142 goals for us in 5 seasons(312 gp) with a 55g performance. He was a more complete player than Bure while here. He also had the balls to give poop to team mate Mark Messier out on the home ice.

Peca became pretty dominant after we traded him. I'll never forget his first game with us when he nailed Selanne at centre ice. The Jets were so pissed, and the next game there was talk of them getting even, and he lays out Dallas Drake with a monster hit.
Mogilny was good every 6-7th game. Invisible in between. But man he had skills, just didn't care enough about winning. |

No buyout for Mike Richards. @lakings terminate contract for a material breach of the requirements of his Standard Player’s Contract. Wow

Peca was also injury prone to hell and actually came out of the Selanne hit worse in the end with a broken cheekbone and a month out.
His dominance was so short lived... it was sad really. One of my faves from that generation. |

I'm not sure they can wait until TDL to move some of the players before then to open roster spots at the NHL level for guys who need waivers |

Pronger gets into the HHOF with 2 years at 4.9 million left on his contract...he's still salary-padding for the Coyotes while working for the disciplinary board |

The way I look at it, they traded Lack for 2 picks PLUS Markstrom. Without the trade Markstrom walks. Without the trade, Nucks were paying 2 goalies to be backup to Miller. Long term, I expect Markstrom will be the better of the 2. I dont see Lack being able to play a solid 60+ game season.
While I liked him and he is a good player, saying goodbye to him in fact improved the Canucks (by bring in a stronger player and eliminating a contract). Getting a strong prospect in the 2015 draft and a lottery ticket in 2016 is a great bonus. Would I have liked to get more, yes, but obviously the other GMs did not see Lack as much more than a good backup and would not pony up. For those that feel Benning got screwed on the return, just remember, no one else was prepared to pay more. If any team thought Lack would improve their team more than a 39th pick, they would have upped the anti. - Lostinarink
Carolina 3rd round pick was near the top.... pretty much a second rounder with the depth of this draft. I think it was a decent return for a guy that was most likely going to walk at the end of the season if he didn't have a clear shot at the number one gig and like you said it was the only offer.... if Lack was any good i'm pretty sure more than one team would have given a concrete offer. Lack is a solid backup at best!!!!!! |

I loved Pronger as a player, don't get me wrong, he was mean, he was dirty, but he was also oh so very talented. Wherever he went teams won...not a coincidence! |

Ya no poop... top of his generation.
He had to be groomed into maturity the stories go. Partying, latency for team stuff... conflicts with vets. In the end, he was a legendary leader. Even when he was in a city he didnt want to play in, he led the Coilers into the final.

They flipped it to Colorado to move up in the 2nd round - WhiteLie
Im pretty sure it was colorados 2nd they flipped from next year. they still would have their second.
And not sure if i like Vey not getting another cheap year, but glad Weber hasnt been offered yet, if Bieksa goes its Tanev-Clendening-Corrado on the right side and theres nothing wrong with that |

He was a beast. Look at what happened to Edm after he left, and the Flyers didn't exactly light the world on fire after he got hurt. |
