That negotiation ended without a deal. But it may have drove the price up on Bieksa?

JB was saying a lot of teams in the east value west players (or did he just say Canuck players) less than maybe they should so I was thinking if there was any truth to the rumours of KB getting an extension at 4mil per, that might get some consideration in establishing his worth.

Hopefully.

I think now you just want the cap space. I woulda taken a second next year. Why not? Sven is the 2nd this year. Now that the draft is over teams don't value their picks as much as when you're close to the draft.

They are gonna be in limbo until the old no trade contracts from Gillis are up

Thanks Carol - the amount of garbage coming out of fans regarding Jim Benning is embarrassing. Jesus he's been on the job 12 months, let the guy find his way before you crucify him.

Here's some bad cap management for you!!

Spezza + Niemi + Lehtonen + Goligoski + Daley = $25.8 million #yiiiikes

I for one am fairly content with the draft given the constraints. Of course it's a wait and see on the talent drafted but that will take time. We will however see what Benning is made of with upcoming moves - not so much free agency but more so in moving out some older guys and paving way for a refresh/rebuild. I'm not expecting much for Bieksa if he goes (2nd round 2016 maybe).

at this point i would take anything for any of our aging core. Rebuild and be awful for a few years.

No buyout for Mike Richards. @lakings terminate contract for a material breach of the requirements of his Standard Player’s Contract. Wow

- LeftCoaster

Will be interesting to see the details on that (if released). Richards probably will have his name dragged through the dirt. Hookers and blow anybody?

Our draft was so good last year, I think many people were expecting the same thing again this year. Benning did a pretty good job considering we didn't have a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

Vey was pretty much our 2nd rounder this year... his play last year maybe wasn't what we were expecting, but at least he played NHL games.

I like to think Baertchi was our 2nd this year...

Hi Carol. We arent hard on the GMs. They need to be able to pull off a deal once in a while. Talking about no cap space, too many contracts. That can be solved. It doesnt though, go into the season with very minor changes with the same results. Needs to be a time where a major shake up has to happen.

You gotta think that if successful it is going to open a can of worms league wide.

Benning is strong on the scouting as we all know. He needs someone to negotiate on his behalf. Like Burke/Nonis etc. If they were working on a Bieksa deal for a week why was there never any clarity which year the 2nd would be? If Wilson threw that out at the last minute, you don't deal with the guy, why would you?
- VanHockeyGuy

Sure sounds like Wilson pulled the last minute switcheroo.

Not gonna lie take a run at Hodgson once he gets bought out. Sign him for 1.5 mil X 3 and see what happens. Maybe henrik and Dany can straighten him out
- The_Kuze

IMO that ship has sailed. Hodgson and his Dad aren't a good fit on this team.

Right. Vey was last year.
Either way, I'm happy with the direction. Just need to cut a couple weak links.

I wouldn't have been against the 2nd from next draft.

If we were trading Edler, a hole would be left in the lineup, but with Bieksa, not so much- I think that showed last season with the AHL d core we had going for a stretch...

The Canucks have pulled off plenty of deals in the past where they made out extremely well. In recent years we haven't traded a person of any value, outside of Kesler who had the constraints of a full NTC and one team to which Benning had to deal with, to get a valued return from.

Linden was traded for Bertuzzi, McCabe and Ruutu - good hall.
Bertuzzi was traded for Luongo - good haul.
Bure was traded for Ed Jovanovski, Dave Gagner, Mike Brown, Kevin Weeks and a first-round pick - good haul.
Stojanov was traded for Naslund - good haul.

If that's the case there are 3 options

a) Drive up SJ price
b) Trade him to another team
c) Keep him and trade another player

Why not? h\He has tons of skills in negotiating. Hello NHLPA President?
- thundachunk

I dont think he is a bad negotiator, or even bad to have him step in to seal deals, but I want my GM and his assistants being visible on the front line, running to tables at the draft and providing the comments, not my president a la Toronto

The way I look at it, they traded Lack for 2 picks PLUS Markstrom. Without the trade Markstrom walks. Without the trade, Nucks were paying 2 goalies to be backup to Miller. Long term, I expect Markstrom will be the better of the 2. I dont see Lack being able to play a solid 60+ game season.

While I liked him and he is a good player, saying goodbye to him in fact improved the Canucks (by bring in a stronger player and eliminating a contract). Getting a strong prospect in the 2015 draft and a lottery ticket in 2016 is a great bonus. Would I have liked to get more, yes, but obviously the other GMs did not see Lack as much more than a good backup and would not pony up. For those that feel Benning got screwed on the return, just remember, no one else was prepared to pay more. If any team thought Lack would improve their team more than a 39th pick, they would have upped the anti.

Carol you haven't answered my question, you told Lefty that as a parent you love us all equally. My question was do you love them equally if they're gingers?

thank you

They still have it, but if Wilson really (frank)ed Benning at the last minute (frank) him. Open up the market.

Yeah, if you add Sven and Pedan(?) to the draft class, it's not that bad.

I was bummed to see a deal couldn't be made with the Sharks for Bieksa, but they were offering a second next year, and if that is the case then Benning can trade him at any point and get that back.

Lack trade was a mystery. Lehner was a highway robbery deal and Tim Murray wanted him bad in Buffalo, as he had drafted him. Talbot was deemed a higher class goalie, and I'm glad Eddie din't end up in SJ or Edmonton. I guess the high 3rd pick is the best available. Sucks for Eddie though, as the Canes are a mess.
