Yes, but his contract termination is public record. There is no way to hide that and LA can't wait for a later date to retro terminate. - Glak18
I believe a contract can be terminated at any time with sufficient grounds. Perhaps they can't wait for a later date, because free agency starts in a few days, and they need the cap space as soon as possible?

It sounds like some reporters/hockey people know something more than is being reported:
@Buccigross: Just heard first bit of Mike Richards info...wowzer if true. Stay tuned.
...but aren't saying what it is. - eayost
wow, responsible reporting does exist. |

I agree, but if it is an ongoing police matter, who would have jurisdiction and control? - MJL
Again - just speculation - if the pending charges were from Canadian officials - they have no jurisdiction to control how a US based org handles a related contract. |

That seems to say they can't agree.
Hoping to get something out of an offer sheet - nails
Maybe. Lots of guys get their qualifying offer but negotiate a real extension in the meantime though right? The Flyers may need July 1 to roll on by before figuring out the most they're willing to go on MDZ |

The fact is, the Kings have terminated the contract, and it's been reliably reported that it was due to an off ice incident "at the border". Be it drugs, be it an altercation, is really irrelevant. The bottom line is that the Kings had a player who they were trying to trade and were very likely to buy out and they found a way to get out of his long and painful contract & got the blessing of the NHL.
I doubt they would take such a step if the case was grieved by the NHLPA, and if it was something sordid and reputation ruining, Richards might decide not to file a grievance. Any speculation is just that. Hopefully it's nothing too serious and just the Kings taking advantage of a moment of stupidity to be hit with a far less severe penalty vis a vis the cap than a buy out - Jsaquella[/quote]
A lot of stupid things happen in life, but if the Kings end up getting penalized for circumventing the cap by doing this. Well this would be the greatest act of stupidity known to man. This would go way beyond getting fined and losing a draft pick. This would be the biggest lawsuit ever and the NHL would be royally screwed. So screwed the whole NHL would become the Arizona Coyotes. |

Haven't made the offer public yet. Just qualified. First step. Offer coming. But it's a place holder. |

I wonder what they're stuck on. You'd almost think MDZ may want another 1 year deal under a coach who talks about the usefulness of puck moving defensemen to boost his value even more before banking on a multi year deal. I'd kind of want to see MDZ for just another year myself |

Yes, by submitting a qualifying offer, the Flyers retain Del Zotto's rights as an RFA. Just a general note, Del Zotto will not accept it, which is to be expected, and doesn't mean much. Arbitration is also possible.

I would like to see more than a 1 year rebound as well.
But, I could see a team like Buffalo or Arizona giving him more cash and term than Hextal wants to commit.

Honestly I don't believe MDZ is in the future plans for the Flyers. It goes in their favor to qualify for 1 year and possibly trade during the season if needed. They also have the option of sending him down with a smaller hit to the cap if he plays poorly. Low risk high reward. Worst case scenario he walks after the year or the Flyers trade him for a small asset. |

Just me guessing, based on the belief that nothing is coincidence
Mike Richards' play drops off a cliff, over two years
Jarrett Stoll is popped with ecstasy and Molly -- and he had to get it from somewhere, and/or he wasn't using in a vacuum
Stoll pleads out -- and we don't know what information he had to provide, or offered, that made it worthwhile for authorities to agree to stop proceedings
Richards involved in an incident at the border, likely going home for the summer
Richards contract terminated, period -- no rehab, no warning
My guess is this: Richards supplied Stoll, Stoll gave him up, authorities know to look for Richards on the cross, and he has enough on him to where he has a really, really, really bad day

If Del Zotto signs his qualifying offer, which is very doubtful, and the Flyers try and put him through waivers, it's doubtful he would clear.

Yes they are. So they took a huge risk to terminate and still get penalized. If they terminated to circumvent without reasonable evidence they are screwed beyond belief and Mike Richards just hit the biggest lottery ever. |

That's why I doubt they went that route, you know they have a load of lawyers and CBA experts and the NHL gave it their blessing. |

Richards would've been arrested, and we would know about it. How could that not be reported at this point in time? |
