The fact that they broke off talks with the Oilers and Flames tells us all that it's not conditioning and that he actually did something
If it's true that it was a border incident, anybody who has crossed a border absolutely knows what that likely is |

What would it likely be? Drugs? Where is the arrest record? Are you telling me that is kept under wraps? That would be public record.

Richards representatives haven't had their say yet, that will come in the grievance process if there is one, and even possibly in other legal proceedings. - MJL
I have another thought. It's been 3 days, the news came out of Richards contract termination, wouldn't you think Mike Richards would be swarmed by people asking "What happened?" followed by a bunch of "No comments". Where is Mike Richards? |

Anyone find the comment from lombardi about not buying him out last year at the end of the article odd:
"It could be the worst decision I've ever made," he said. "But for all the right reasons."
Face value he is saying he should have bought him out because he sucks and his cap hit is terrible.
it's the but that gets me.
Like there was something wrong last year, they knew about it, but were trying to work through it with him.
it really could be drugs etc. and he didn't follow the program/clean up and it became a breach of contract by him not following the rules of his rehab.
Maybe Stoll gave Richards up as part of the plea, which would make the Friday timeline understandable. - nails
Wouldn't there then be an arrest warrant issued?

Good point, Patrick Kane assaulted a taxi driver, correct? Why wasn't his contract terminated? I guess maybe because Chicago still wanted him as a player? - MJL
all about winning cups
Richards has gone past his usefulness in achieving that goal |

I'm not saying you are wrong at all -- your questions are legitimate
But they only look for a few things at the border, and it only begins to go poorly for you if you have weapons and/or contraband

Wild unsubstantiated speculation - what if he turned informant and the whole bust hasn't happened yet. He wouldn't be involved in an arrest that would be public record until the authorities deem it convenient. |

I agree, but that would result in an arrest, which we would've heard of by now.

And the NHL is blowing that cover by announcing his contract is terminated. All we have is wild speculation at this point, and a lot of questions.

only if he was implicated in the plea deal.
and maybe, since the plea was stuck on friday (?), the rest hasn't been released yet or filed
you know how that goes, save the bad stuff for fridays because no one does business on saturday/sunday.
And the richards camp has been pretty quiet. |

It sounds like some reporters/hockey people know something more than is being reported:
@Buccigross: Just heard first bit of Mike Richards info...wowzer if true. Stay tuned.
...but aren't saying what it is. |

Yes, but his contract termination is public record. There is no way to hide that and LA can't wait for a later date to retro terminate. |

Sorry we are having an interesting and adult conversation about a hockey related incident, that also involves a former Flyer. We have enough crappy baseball, basketball and football talk on hockeybuzz to warrant some hockey talk too. |

sorry.
I had said two different scenarios in that comment.
yes, if it was that and not just richards no following a rehab program, then yes, there will be a record.
but that doesn;t mean it hasn't happened.
just that no one knows it has happened.
I would guess that by morning, we will know if that is the case.
someone will know the right someone to find out |

The fact is, the Kings have terminated the contract, and it's been reliably reported that it was due to an off ice incident "at the border". Be it drugs, be it an altercation, is really irrelevant. The bottom line is that the Kings had a player who they were trying to trade and were very likely to buy out and they found a way to get out of his long and painful contract & got the blessing of the NHL.
I doubt they would take such a step if the case could be successfully grieved by the NHLPA, and if it was something sordid and reputation ruining, Richards might decide not to file a grievance. Any speculation is just that. Hopefully it's nothing too serious and just the Kings taking advantage of a moment of stupidity to be hit with a far less severe penalty vis a vis the cap than a buy out |

That's because he was hanging out at a bar, not the border patrol office. |
