Jesus Christ, I wonder what Richards could have done? If it was something serious then I guess good on the Kings for finding a way out of the mess they made by not using the CBO last year. |

Oh, my.
That sounds like he got caught doing something.
Because everyone knows that they want cap relief, and that they've tried to trade him, and that they were buying him out.
The only way you try to terminate his deal is if he straight-up got caught doing something - AllInForFlyers
Yup.
I'd be surprised if they tried to do this on the basis of being out of shape. That precedent would cause Don Fehr to come out of the woodwork.

It could be something as simple as him not conditioning in the off season - benjichronic
I dont know the players rights in the CBA, but lack of conditioning seems like a weak excuse to void a contract. Things like criminal violations, repetitive drug and alcohol abuse (after treatments) and stuff like that I could understand.. but I still think it should have to go through some sort of tribunal. |

It would be a weak reason to do so, but a cap strapped team like LA, you do watcha gotta do to get by.
But yeah I agree it's probably something a little more than just conditioning.

When did I say I wanted them to trade for Boychuk? It was just an example. - Tomahawk
When did I say that you did want to trade For Boychuk? It was a simple and reasonable question. |

This whole Richards thing is pretty poopty considering they are not exercising this same "void of contract" thing with Voynov who is facing felony domestic abuse charges. |

So lets recap:
I disagree with you that Striet was a bad signing, something you claim as fact. And I agree with the other post that the Flyers need to get away from the "ooh shiny" mentality. You say that is somehow contradictory.

Slava Voynov and Jarret Stoll in LA, but it's Mike Richards contract that is terminated because of a "breach". Seems fishy to say the least. |

I'm no lawyer, but the worst I've seen a team be able to do to a player who is deemed to be unfit is suspend them, or send them on extended conditioning assignments, not terminate a contract.
Somebody's going to find out soon enough, but I have a feeling that the Kings threw a Hail Mary out there and found out something that they are going to argue is actionable
For them to go straight to contract termination, not suspension...woof |

Well right now we are at the point of Deal Streit or Deal MDZ. Doesnt look like we can have both - xShoot4WarAmpsx
Why not? They have the cap space to have both. |

But wife beating doesn't warrant termination?
Whatever it is it sure does seem that cap relief is the primary motive. |

So Voynov beats the poop out of his wife, and Stoll gets caught with blow and Molly in Vegas, but the Kings can terminate Richards' deal?
Me thinks there's going to be a grievance filed by the NHLPA |

LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Kings have terminated the contract of forward Mike Richards, the club announced today.
The club has issued the following statement and will not comment any further at this time:
“The Los Angeles Kings today have exercised the team's right to terminate the contract of Mike Richards for a material breach of the requirements of his Standard Player's Contract. We are not prepared to provide any more detail or to discuss the underlying grounds for the contract termination at this time.”
So, uh, is this different from a buyout then? - BulliesPhan87

First, from a bunch of the reports I have read, most of the GMs in the NHL didn't know he was available. And even if we didn't have Streits contract, we didn't have the assets that Boston was looking for, I don't think. they were trying to get into that 3 hole to get Hannifen.
I think Homer's greatest failing was overvaluing what he had and then bad circumstance as well.
Isn't there a decent chance that with a healthy Kimo they make the play offs last year?
And look at it this way, there is an excellent chance that Streit gets moved at the TDL. so there is an asset obtained that you wouldn't have had if Streit wasn't signed. - nails
By two o'clock Friday I knew that Hamilton was available. If an NHL GM didn't know he probably should have his job taken away.
The Bruins wanted to make sure they bettered any offer sheet that was made so they needed better than a 1st, a 2nd and a 3rd. Not sure what they wanted from AZ but I know that they didn't offer any of their 3 firsts in the deal. My guess is Sweeney overplayed his hand trying to get the 3rd overall for Hamilton and getting more picks besides. Whatever the plan was, I don't think they came out with nearly the return they wanted.
The Flyers would have had to pony up Sanheim plus for Hamilton. I hope the Flyers walk away from that. |

Plus, i could be wrong, but legally don't they have to offer him rehabilitation before they could terminate him? Could be wrong. |
