I don't subscribe to that opinion at all. He is responsible for the 2010 run as well as the bright future of our team sans-2015 draft. If you weighed his good moves and bad moves on a scale, it'd be considered a good run. That being said, anything that doesn't bring a cup is considered a failure. But saying that a GM failed vs. saying he sucked are two different things. - steelydan
hey you guys like holmgren, good for you. but for me he made too many ill advised moves. wow we got a cup finals appearance whoop dee ding doo. |

I'm not ruling anything out anymore -- Hexy be walkin' on water. |

Almost the exact situation the Hawks found themselves in this year. Difference being Crawford, is better than Leighton/Boucher, and the Hawks core have about 6-7 elite players, Flyers only had a few in 2010. - PLindbergh31
Flyers had a pretty strong core during the 2010 playoff run. Not that Leino did much after the following season.

I'm not sure you could come up with a less relevant analogy in the discussion on the merits of the Streit signing. To this point all you've come up with is what may happen in the future, and the above analogy, rather than looking at what has actually happened. |

No need to "whoop dee ding doo" it. You said it was widely accepted. Seems to me that you're just taking your opinion and spouting off the mouth as if you speak for everyone. Even good GM's make poor decisions. Kings won 2 cups yet they'll be paying Richards for 10+ years, with a compliance buyout that just burned a hole in their pocket. I think Homer would've seen a cup from this team in the next 5 years or so if he was able to stay as GM. Now we'll get to see Hexy reap some of his good deals (and bad) and bring Philly a cup. I'm happy either way. |

its called foresight and risk management... for every player who has held up after the age of 35 and played at an allstar level there has to be at least 10 who didn't. but then again i look at the rosters of Chicago and tampa bay yup keeping the cupboard full of late 30's defensemen on ling term deals aeems to be the way to go. |

they'd have valuable cap room and flexibility and still be missing the playoffs without him. By the time this team is competitive again they may likely be hamstrung, yet again by a player with a big contract making minimal impact.no need to have signed him. - JoeRussomanno
Because Striet has 2 years left on a deal that has been very good for both sides? You argue just for the sake of arguing.

Refer back to numerous blogs and articles written about that time period. Clarke was all over that pick, right up until the time of remmbering his name at the podium. - MJL
no. the flyers wanted that dman that the rangers took just ahead of them. Giroux was not the player th eflyers wanted with that first pick |

the signing was neither prudent or necessary imo. you care to disagree thats fine i hope you guys are enjoying missing the playoffs with the easily avoided mess homer made for us. |

So here's my theory : Gagner is the 6th overall draft pick and has played on notoriously horrible teams! He's cheap, young and skilled Edmonton can't develope any of there lottery picks including Taylor Hall who has been a disappointment compared to john Tavares. We are paying Matt Read 3.6 million a year to give us the same 40 points except last season where he had a dismall 9G 17A
So my point is who can you get who is willing to play all 3 forward positions that has the potential to eclipse 40 points on flyers team that is trending upwards for a reasonable cap hit and minimal years left on his contract? |

Unfortunately Joe, sometimes its not that easy to pull 25 y/o stud d-men out of thin air.
We are making the best of a bad situation. They seem to have learned from their mistakes. Seeing how they have the deepest defensive prospect pool in the league.. Id say they know they real way to go. |

Streit has 96 points in two seasons as a Flyer. There are probably some other Holmgren moves you could focus on instead. |

learning from their dumb ass mistakes isn't tge issue. its whether or not ol' paul's job of no playoffs in two out of three years was good or not. |

Matt Read was hurt pretty much all last season. If Gagner plays with the Flyers this season im all for it. Hope he kills it. If he gets bought out... Ill have to return my Gagner jersey the same day i buy it. |

wow! how many playoff series have weeon? answer 0. again a player that is going to be too old by the time can compete and cluttering the roster. yet still a considerable cap hit. |

So lets get back to your original point. How has his deal hamstrung the team? How will it effect the team going forward, as you say, when the time comes? Do you expect that to be sooner than two years?

So we havent won playoff series and that is because we signed Streit? Joe, he has been a very solid signing/ The team hasnt been great, but thats not because we signed Mark Streit. |

Your logic states you believe that is all Striets fault then? Just want to clarify, because your point needs A LOT of clarifying for any of us to actually grasp your point.

ive elaborated on this ad nauseam. ive predicted the downfall of several players, whose contracts would be a thorn in our sides to which my throat has been jumped down. but lets keep celebrating the great tenure and decision of paul holmgren! whata genius! |
