Hawks had the worst draft followed by the Leafs. - VANTEL
When you've just won your third Cup in six years I can understand how the Hawks had a poor draft...although I haven't really checked to see who they took. |

Hawks are fine. They used their picks to win a cup . |

troll? why would i need to troll when the canucks have traded luongo, schneider and lack for prospects and picks? - sensnucksnocups
And yet the Canucks are still heads and shoulders better than the Leafs and they have more/better prospects - go figure |

I'm pretty sure they didn't have many picks left plus Sharp wasn't moved but that could still go down. |

he's just trolling.
Marner and Bracco will be studs if they can overcome their size issues, and the way the NHL is heading that won't be a problem.
Dermott has top 4 upside.
Meanwhile the nucks traded Lack for a 3rd. so it's pretty clear why he's hating on the leafs, so he can feel better about his team that can't even start rebuilding yet because they are unable to move miller. |

That's all I meant. They had no picks because they traded them to win another cup. I am sure they are ok with that |

They actually had a pretty good draft, and good on them for trading back and acquiring more picks. |

lol no they arent. both teams have zero chance of winning the cup.
the leafs have at least realized they have no chance and need to rebuild. the nucks are still hoping they can win the cup and can't even commit to a rebuild partially because there are zero takers for miller.
in 2-3 years the nucks can finally start rebuilding once the sedins expensive contracts are over and miller is gone. |

I've had a few hours to think about things, and this is where I stand now. I think Benning isn't a GM, he's an assistant GM who's focus is on amateur and minor pro scouting/evaluation. He needs someone who has experience dealing with the old boys club that is the NHL and can advise him properly. Trevor Linden isn't that guy, until he was hired as President, the only real NHL managerial experience he's had was being President of the NHLPA which could be held against him by some of the older GMs.
Gillis left the team in a mess, but Benning hasn't done much to really fix that mess except to rebuild our AHL development system. This is great, because eventually we'll see results there (and have) with players being brought up in our system to play on the big club. My problem is, I think he can get us to the point where we have a core that could potentially get past the point of being a playoff bubble team. I'm just not sure he'll be able to take us to that next step of being a contender.
I guess I'm one of those people that do not want to see a tanking rebuild because I don't see us being able to compete when it's our turn against Edmonton and Calgary. I feel like it's the late 80's all over again when we were in the Smythe Division and Gretzky et. al and Niewendyk and all in Calgary were schooling us every year and winning Cups and all. - DariusKnight
You make some good observations. I don't think Benning has a problem dealing with the old boys club though... hard to feel that after most of the league boycotted gillis. We did most of our trading with the Panthers. There wasnt much available as far as experienced NHL gm's who were not chumps when JB was hired.
I do agree that he may not be the guy to build a cup winner though. That's so far away, he will probably be replaced by then just based on expiry dates alone. I'm good with having a GM who's strong points is development and the draft at this present moment. When/if it all gels, we need to take a honest look at JB that's for sure.

I would consider 3 first rounders pretty succesfull. Considering what they gave up not brilliant by any means. But they are a team that isnt afraid to say screw lets start building for the future.
They got their cup a few years back, realized they dont have the pedigree to do it again and did what needed to be done.
I think they did pretty well.
Lucic I think is a bad locker room guy. just like Seguin. From reports here and there I dont think he was the most popular guy amongst his team mates. But thats just speculation.
I was intrigued when I heard he could come here, but ultimately was somewhat satisfied when I heard he wasnt.
Local boy or not, the guy is a DBAG. Hence why I was happy to see Kesler hit the dusty road. |

I remember so many people claiming that the Hawks blew it all up after their first cup and it wasnt worth it. Then they won another.. and another.
Out of all the teams in the NHL, I admire their success the most now. They just keep making the right moves and getting it done.
My first criticism of Gillis was not firing AV and hiring Quenville. I had already soured on AV and really liked JQ.

I find it hard to be envious of not winning something when we weren't part of the league .
Since our birth as a team we have the same amount of cups, and we have made it to the fourth round three times. |

Bowman.
Proven winners. know what it takes. do things right.
Chicago as much as people hate them in this city, really know how to do it right. I admire that franchise. |
