Need for need is a lateral move. The players involved don't necessarily have to be in the same position. Do you understand this concept?

Take the Sekac for Smith-Pelley deal. Montreal needed size up front and had an abundance of small, skilled forwards. Anaheim had a ton of size up front and wanted some speed and skill. Both teams traded from a position of strength to address a weakness. Both teams improved in the area of need yet neither team "won" the trade. Hence a lateral move for both.

A trade for different types of assets that fill different needs for teams is not lateral and a forward for defenseman is certainly not either

The problem the leafs have, is his NTC doesn't leave them with a lot of options. They want many young propects, not a lateral deal. The only teams with the right kind of prospects, are teams not on his list.
(I do believe the rumor that he nixed a deal with Arizona already. )

It may be that the leafs need to deal Bozak first (or as part of the package), in order to get Kessel to soften his stance.

100% true. If Kessel is unwilling to waive for a team outside the 8 on his list, he'll never get traded for fair value.
