Would have to be 7 years max. And who says he wants to play in Edmonton? Just because they offer it doesn't mean he has to sign it.

Thats right... I think the sleeper team to place a bid is those Flyers- they are as opportunistic as they come from the NHL...

There is NO WAY Sweeney will let Hamilton go if offer sheeted at $7M. Our two best prospects in recent years (Kessel/Seguin) were traded away, and the fan base won't stand for another young star being sent packing. Sweeney obviously knows that, and won't let his first major move be a major mistake, it would haunt him for the duration of his GM career. It's also too perfect that Dougie will be coming in to his prime when Chara retires, leaving us with a smooth transition in to a new #1 D-man for the next 7/8 years. That's a luxury not many teams have.

Only way it could even be considered to not match the offer, would be if it was over the 7.4 threshold that would yield 2 1st's. I doubt Dougie gets that much, and I still bet we match. So long Lucic.

7.3 per for Dougie Hamilton?

Jesus Christ. This might be the longest off season of all time.

i thought you had to give up your own assigned picks when offer sheeting players. meaning if the oilers do so, they need to part with the 1st overall pick and cannot give the 16th instead. is this right?

Offer sheets don't draw the team's original pick(s) until the following draft year. So in this case it would be 2016.

Pretty sure you don't have to give that year's pick.. they would give 2016 first

Nope. Bruins aren't letting him go and then you're left spinning your wheels for a week waiting on Boston, like the Weber situation a few years back. I think the Bruins have enough wiggle room with other contracts to make it work.

Teams can spend up to 10% over the Cap......so $78.5 mill, as long as they get under on the first day of the season.

Could also wait to sign Spooner and Connolly until season started if they wanted to really screw with everyone.

It's not as dire as people think with Hamilton.......we need to shed Cap, definitely, but we will be able to give him the money as long as it's not "stupid," over $7.3.

Yeah exactly, there's just so much the Bruins could do to keep their franchise player who they really need with Chara getting on in years. No way they take a 1st 2nd and third for a #1 defenseman who will probably play for 10-15 more years. They'l do anything in their power to sign him. Sure Edmonton could do it but then they're tied up for a week while other teams are making moves. If Edmonton really really wants him, they'll have to put together a deal on the edge of an overpayment fll of picks and prospect, even then it'll still be tough.

Not Hextalls MO no.
But Hamilton would be well worth it, (a first & third)?
For a $5-6 mill offer?
Edit 1st, 2nd, & 3rd for a $6/6.5 mill a year offer.
No, Hextall wouldn't want to, but Hamilton is a first rounder himself, so that's a wash,
& he shores up a position that's #1 priority.

DJ Bean of WEEI had this chart..........first rounders are overvalued by fans in general. If there are that many misses add in how "rare" number one D-men are.
