I'm certain his financial adviser is doing all he can to educate him on the consequences of walking away from $5.5 million dollars. If he isn't, he's a horrible adviser and should be fired immediately.
Just because you are already rich doesn't mean you can/should walk away from money. - Scoob
Might be even more than that, because there's no guarantee that he'd even get another offer. Maybe the best he can get is a tryout.
Me, I'd try to trade him & if he wasn't tradeable, I'd just take the hit me buy him out.

Right. Earlier I posted that imho he shouldn't consider a mutual termination unless he already has a handshake deal in place that gets him at least 75% of what he'd be walking away from.

I think the problem is he is concerned if he'll have one possible option, versus having 29. If he is a UFA, he could be looking at a camp tryout. - MJL
Yeah, I seriously doubt teams are clamoring to sign him given his recent track record. I'm not holding my breath for a mutual termination.

Also, if he doesn't agree or can't be traded, or doesn't doa termination, then I tell him, the only way he's playing is if there's so many injuries I can't fit another body

tbh I don't even consider scratching him to be some sort of threat or method of persuasion. He earns (or doesn't) his ice time just like everybody else. There's no star player track record to lean on for him anymore.

If his agent isn't fielding promising calls that may be his only option.
just got my free draft tickets from the Panthers - vejim
Make sure you get there early and talk to all of the famous people you can. There's a draft party for MvW the night before. That's usually pretty cool.

So you believe he would rather sit in the press box and watch, rather that attempt to play somewhere else because of money? That seems to be his two options.
I understand that the playing somewhere else is not guaranteed, definitely not at 75%. I don't think 75% is happening no matter what.
But I cant believe that a 35 year old, filthy rich, professional athlete, who is probably close to retirement, would rather take the money over the chance to play, even if it is for way less.
If he were a school teacher making 40 grand I would probably feel differently.
Animals, every single one of them. Just another reason I enjoy saving my money and watching safely from my living room. - hockeylover
I don't know if I'd call them "animals." We were 2 sections over and the NYR fans started just screaming poop at people after the game got out of hand (after Simmer's hat trick). Not saying it's justification for resorting to physical violence, because I don't think I'd ever fight someone over a sporting event, but it wasn't exactly out of nowhere.

I have no idea what he'd rather do, or how he prioritizes all of the things that must be considered.
Only he can do that.
Maybe he's another Timonen - wants to go out in skates but physically can't do it. Why give up $5.5m here to take $1m somewhere else and end up riding the pine anyway?
The 37-year-old defenceman had knee and back injuries that limited him to a career-low 63 games last season, putting him on the training table every day for treatment.
"How much fun is it to come to the rink when you can hardly walk?" Detroit coach Mike Babcock asked, adding he's thrilled Rafalski is leaving on his own terms.

He could have gone on LTIR... he just walked away from the cash.
the flyers do not need vinnys cap space right now as they are not contending. same with umberger. No way do you buy them out and have that cap hit 3 years from now when you hope they are contending. actually might help them as they don't have the $ to overpay anyone.....
if he has to sit in the press box so be it. I do not believe it will be distraction or anything of that nature. if it does you deal with it. Flyers hold all the cards imo and can just let him rot really.
