Can't buy him out, the first 3 years would carry a cap penalty of 2.9 million. No way they are going to carry 2.9 million of dead space for 3 years
- BiggE

Yeah.

Hextall is basically playing a big game of chicken.

Terminate or get ready to sit or play 4th line and be quiet.

It's too early to buy Vinny out when Voracek, Couturier, BSchenn, and Raffl all need new contracts starting in 16-17. Trading him with salary retained is a much cheaper option.

I really don't see what leverage Vinny has if he considers himself a viable NHL player.

He either plays and leaves money on the table or he sits and cashes a check.

In his mind he might think he will earn playing time on a scoring line.

I think that's the game they are playing.

We will see who blinks. It's a gutsy play on Hextalls part. He is probably hoping Vinny's pride is too big and they come together for termination. Also Hextall didn't sign him to this deal so maybe it makes it harder for him to play this hardball.

That's great that you know how it is.

These players have been conditioned for a schedule that has controlled their life. Working out, games, road trips, practice. Then it ends and they have to fill that time. Yeah he could be fine. But it's not like multiple athletes haven't run into problems after they retired.

- J35Bacher

No, I don't know how it is, nor claim to.

Are we speaking of the ones that are set for life?
Or, the ones that are struggling, because there have been plenty of stories of the later.
I don't recall any players crying about the transition, that are fine financially.
I'm not debating a dead issue, or silly opinion.
If Vinny were bought out tomorrow, I don't think we will be reading about his struggles, no longer relating to vigorous travel schedules, and not being able to eat pizza, because he has a body fat content to consider.

Vinny will terminate the deal IMO. He knows he doesn't have much time left as a player. If you were a player and financially stable, would you sit on the bench the last years of your career for a few more million or go and try to play somewhere else before your career is over?

The only thing I could see as an issue is that the union wouldn't be too happy with him if he terminated his contract. It could open a can of worms where as other teams would use this tactic.

Maybe I am too proud of a person. If I read these stories about me, I would be working my a$$ off to prove them wrong and earn my time this coming season. I would never want my career to end as a pressbox regular, buyout, or mutual termination.

And in Ron Hextall's mind, Vinny will be a press box denizen. Vinny is not going to get a shot on a scoring line unless, litrilly, someone dies.

I'm sure Vinny would like the same opportunity that Kimmo Timonen had to "go out with his skates on".

Like Mark Recchi said, your legs are the first sign that it may be time to hang them up.
Or something like that.

Vinny is a rich older player living the good life of golfing, fine dining and luxury. I think he yearns for Florida

If he were signed for one year at $2mill, yes. That's what makes him the elephant in the room, his contract term.
When other aging centers signed on, after getting bought out, it was for one, or two years. Not for 5 declining years.

Vinny probably thinks he can still play. And maybe he can.

It just looks like Hextall has made it clear it won't happen here.

Being Vinny is 35 and had made a boat load of money so far in his career, I can see him being willing to terminate the contract after 7/1 in order to get out of this situation. No proud player wants to be scratched game after game or be stuck on the 4th line when they think they can still contribute. its a shame the signing didn't work out. Vinny seems like a class act.

maybe there is a light at the end of the tunnel.... only 2 yrs left on Umberger and pronger's deals and the potential Vinny termination (fingers crossed).

You don't want to see this happen too often, but I have believed all along that the Flyers need to play hardball with Vinny.

If a trade cannot be found, which is likely, the options are clear.

He wants out, take a mutually agreed termination.

If you want the cash, then collect it as a frequent and/or healthy scratch.

There should be no other options on the table, in my opinion.

Not in my mind. All he's done is act like a spoiled brat in Philly.

And yeah, that's harsh, and he's a professional guy who has done a lot of charity. Point is though, he signed on the dotted line of a contract for the Philadelphia Flyers, and he's failed on every single level in fulfilling that contract, IMO.

Because in comparison to other players, he hasn't beat up his wife, or had ongoing drug problems.
No one held a gun to Homer's head, he had $ to play with, that was the problem.
I still say if had his skating legs, he would be able to contribute in some way, a good comparison is Brad Richards.
He signed for one year, & will again, and look at the contribution he's made.

I have no problem being a 35 yo player being paid millions to sit in the pressbox and enhance my future scouting skills

That's because you have the persepctive of a normal guy, who doesn't have millions to his name. That situation would be an upgrade in terms of financial status for normal people. For a professional athlete who has been at the top of his profession for a long time, it is a downgrade.
