Convincing a guy like Babcock to sign on is a huge coup. He may be inexperienced vut Shanny just got the best coach in the game to sign on, so he must be doing something right.

Babcock would of coached a team in Israel for that money. Players under a cap restraint is a little different...just a little

Our owner is a billionaire too. I'm quite content with the choice we made. Although I could care less about how much of Katz's money gets spent

If the Leafs literally eat half of Phan salary
- Landsbergfan

Taking Weiss back, for example, would effectively eat $4.9 million of it, with nothing retained.

He had at least another offer of the same amount and still chose here. Regardless of how it got done, it got done and in the end it's all that matters. It's just like a game. You either win or lose, and Shanahan just produced a big win for this team.

Seems to me Leafs have done nothing, when does the rebuild begin. All u hear is how they are gonna add another guy to the front office. Nothing has changed with the on ice product.
- Greene19

Seems to me that the same could be said about all 28 teams who aren't competing for the Cup. Remind us how many trades occur in a typical season between the trade deadline and when the eventual champs hoist the Cup.

Not to be a dink...but you did just beat out Buffalo for the "more desireable" situation/city.

Personally if I was the Leafs id want to finish last or near last for the next few years, Babcock will prevent that

I bet Phaneuf, Bozak, and Lupul all get moved before Kessel. I actually can't see how both Lupul and Phaneuf are back next year. I expect both to be traded.

Kessels deal is just massive. So is Phaneuf, but you're expected to eat some salary there. Phil truly is an 8 million dollar player, and I think that's what Shanahan say if the Leafs are asked to retain salary

To much money and to many years on the deal for most teams. The teams that are probably all in (Arizona, Florida, etc), Phil likely won't accept a trade to.

- mochoson

Leafs aren't retaining salary on Phaneuf.

Teams are willing to pay players like MacDonald 5.5. That's a normal price now for 2nd/3rd pairing guys.

1.5M more for a top pairing defender isn't an issue.

....

I don't get how this makes getting Babcock any less meaningful for this team.
