You can't buy a house in Toronto for under 500 any more.

Even the ones listed at 4-something will see a bidding war that brings them up to 5.

Only options for a first-time buyer are tiny condos or houses out in places like Ajax/Oakville/Bramptagesh.

...or of course just paying away all your earnings in rent.

- Schenn-Sational!

Houses in Oakville are far from cheap.. My Mother lives there. Over 500 K for her place easy.

I like that hunter came out and said they aren't just looking for big players. He said he doesn't mind drafting a guy who is 5'10 and wide. Also said they are looking to draft kids with character. What a huge change up from past years.

Most of the current players can't spell character.

nice.

I married a city gal who doesn't want to move past Dupont street in Toronto or live in the east end of the city. And no burbs and she likes a short walk to get her red eye coffee.

I'm an east end guy. I won't go much west of Yonge, although we did live in the Annex for a few years.

Now living just south of Eglinton. I'd venture up as high as Yonge and Lawrence, but only if I was close to Yonge.

If you look at how Toronto's population is growing, and how we are never going to improve public transit, I'd say you are a sucker if you don't live within walking distance of an existing subway.

complete gutting for $22k!?
- The Law

Yep, that is the total.

$5500 was the wiring and plumbing.

$9,000 for materials (drywall, lumber and screws plus some other stuff, bathroom, tiles and floor)

$7500 for kitchen and flooring ( my nephew works for the manufacturer, got a big discount)

My brother in-law and I already had all the tools needed, did not need to purchase anything but blades for the saws and a few small tools that needed replacing. That was a huge expense savor.

Furniture and granite counters are not included but none of that was included with the quotes.

So here's the question that we still need to figure out: what's the job market like?
- Schenn-Sational!

Depends on what you do.

But I wouldn't count on a Torontonian going up there and being hired instead of a local.

That just doesn't happen.

My university room mate grew up there. He could tell you some stories about the us vs. them mentality.

There's a reason why most young people leave Bracebridge for Toronto - they want careers.

agreed.

The benefit of living in a place like Ajax is that during rush hour you have the express trains that take you to and from downtown in 20 minutes... but in the end, getting to the train and then getting to work from union... it still probably takes you an hour each way. Better than driving, sure, but I honestly don't understand how people have families with that type of commute... and the 9-5 hours(when you're really expected to stay until 6 or later, without pay of course).

C'mon, Bixie - that's crap.

I'm tired you guys spreading your negativity around here about Leafs players.

I bought in 09' and everybody told me then that it was an overpayment and that the bubble will burst. It'll happen one day but demand will always surpass supply in that area (and any area for a 3 story victorian south of Bloor between Beaches and High Park). Prices will just keep climbing b/c of the location and style of house. My neighbour just told me he's about to list ...his asking price made me spit out my beer.

I'd be worried about a bubble if I lived in Milton or north Pickering.

Close to downtown Toronto?

Bulletproof.

Agreed. East v. West - We're like the same but opposites. I've got some soccer buddies who live in Bayview village and some family on Rumsey Rd. - great neighbourhoods just out of my coffee/dog walking zone.

Personally, I'd want to start a business there. I was looking at a property on manitoba street with a store front and apartment above, $239k... and you've got a backyard and garage.

But that requires some seed money to survive the first 3 years. Then, once we have enough saved up again, buy a house and rent out that apartment.... nice dream
