I love the fact that Hextall is bringing in fresh talent to compete for roster spots. Unlike some of the fanbase, it's apparent that he realizes that very few players should feel secure in their roles on a team that has missed the playoffs 2 of the last 3 seasons and hasn't won a playoff round in over 3 years.
Honestly, outside of Giroux, Voracek and Mason, everyone else should be looking over their shoulder. - BiggE
I'm not so sure you give Simmonds an extension and an "A" if this were true. I believe Simmonds has been top 3 in scoring on the man advantage since getting here and his contract in my mind is the most reasonable in the business for his production. |

Yeah I'd say Simmonds is more than safe too.

Ok, I'll add Simmonds to the list.

HEY!!! Maybe the kids know how to play!
 - mayorofangrytown
Ha! You know, it's funny. I know exactly what you're saying. I agree.
And for me: I do understand development and learning curves, but sometimes, non-production is what it is. Yeah, sometimes it sucks when you make a call on a young player and you're wrong, but let's be honest: There are a lot of times when you can make the call early and not sweat it
I mean, look at the guy they signed today (likely for the Phantoms): Aaron Palushaj. 2nd Round Pick. Pretty productive guy in the AHL. 68 NHL games, 14 points. Good skater, not afraid of board work and grinding -- I've watched him play a few times
Left to play in the KHL at 24, after being traded twice, waived-and-claimed once.
Now, whether people are ultimately right or wrong -- who knows. But the bottom line is that for three different franchises, three separate people have made the call that whatever development he showed in the AHL, and despite his youth and draft status, he wasn't in their plans.
Maybe he comes back and proves all those people wrong. But more likely than not, all those people who made the call on him, even when he was far younger, had some idea what they were talking about.
They're not always right. But just because they're kids doesn't mean they can play, and making the call is part of pro sports |

We fight so much on here, I doubt anyone wants to slapfight over a guy who didn't even play on this continent last year |

Look, I know that they aren't going to turn over 80% of the roster in one offseason, but I'd be thrilled if the following were gone before the start of camp:
Grossmann
L Schenn
AMac
VLC
Rinaldo
Umberger |

I think four of those six are gone, at least. No particular order, with Umberger and MacDonald most likely to stay

I think MacDonald is going to do very well under this coach and his reported style of play.

Vinny and the team may mutually part ways after his bonus is paid on July 1st
Rinaldo can simply be waived and would then come off the cap
L Schenn is 25, shoots right, and is physical. With only 1 year left on his deal, some GM will take a chance on him
Grossmann, according to Bill's sources, is valued around the league. Like Schenn, with only one year left in his deal, he can be moved.
Umberger and AMac, well, that will be a little more difficult |

He might -- I wouldn't rule that out
Believe it or not, though, I think there's a chance that some team out there might ask about him. Defensemen are brutally hard to find. MacDonald's flaws are no worse than, what, 30 percent of the league's defensemen
MacDonald's not old. There are gonna be teams out there who look at their defense and know that $5 million per isn't the worst thing they could do. Bill said it earlier: It can always be worse, and there are teams out there who could do worse
For example: Andrej Meszaros made $4-plus million last year |

As with any trade, what is the return? If a trade of MacDonald or any player makes the team better, I'm all for it. That goes without saying. I'm personally not interested in seeing the Flyers trade MacDonald.

This is what I'm hoping for. I'm perfectly willing to go into next season with a top 4 of MDZ, Schultz, Streit and Medvedev. Let the kids battle it out with Gudas and Manning and maybe an inexpensive UFA for the other 3 spots |

I'm ambivalent on him staying or going -- he might be better under a new coach.
But as far as your return question: The Flyers gave up two seconds for him, IIRC. I think they could get that.
This league is strapped for defensemen. We see all their flaws, but I watch a lot of other teams and man, there are teams with worse
Our pieces don't fit well together. But individually, they have some value
Grossmann, Schenn -- they have some value. Not first-rounders, like Coburn. But more value than we might think

It was a 2nd and a 3rd. I wouldn't trade MacDonald for that now. I'd rather keep him.
