Great write up bill. With these signings past few days, and rumored signings with other Russian defenseman, who do you think is or even are players that you see on the trade block or who you won't be surprised if they are gone by the seasons start ?

Immediately after the 1989-90 season, Winter once again informed the Flyers that he wanted to renegotiate Hextall's contract. Jay Snider publicly ripped the agent. New general manager Russ Farwell began to look into trade possibilities. Rumors of potential trades to Detroit or Vancouver swirled.

I wonder if this helped push the Flyers to include Hexy in the Lindros deal?

Considering that Bob Clarke was involved in the 1st Hextall holdout (and we all know how a lot of things became personal with Clarke), perhaps Clarke influenced Jay Snider and/or Russ Farwell to get rid of Hexy.

Not that it matters now, of course.

When Hextall fired Winter and replaced him with Steve Mountain -- for the express purpose of making sure a deal got done, because Winter and the Flyers were at toxic loggerheads -- the fences mended.

Man, my favorite gus moment. What a great play, and then emrick's commentating, "gustaffson down at the other end, scoooooore".

Don't I know it...makes me think of some of the late 80s and early 90s Flyers D Corps! Yikes!

Great blog again today, Bill. I've got to say, I really appreciate the depth that you go in to when writing your blogs. It's night and day compared to most other bloggers on HB.

I really hope that something gets worked out with Zaitsev. Although he would have the same issues that Medvedev will have translating his game to smaller ice and stiffer competition, I feel that he would also be an upgrade from some on the current roster. Hextall saying that no more defensemen would be added due to the logjam doesn't leave me with a good feeling, but perhaps they have a deal done, in principle, pending the termination of Zaitsev's KHL contract.

If that were to happen, I think that there would be quite a bit of work to be done freeing up the space. It would, almost certainly, mean trading 2-3 of the current defensemen. Is this realistic?

Mountain, I believe, represented more than a few Flyers during that period of time which probably helped mend those fences.

Hi all,
When can teams start making trades? During or after the finals?

Thanks!

Honestly, I think any and all Flyers defensemen are available for the right price. It just depends on the deals out there. I would think they move Grossmann this summer (since Gudas is here at a lower cost, albeit not as proven as an NHL regular, and Morin is in the winds). Everyone else, it depends on what assets are being offered. I'd think they also shop Schenn. The others would depend on clubs approaching Philly, although the Flyers will probably at least kick tires to see if there is interest in MacDonald even if salary comes back this way.

The Flyers won't shop Streit, but he's not untouchable. Ditto Schultz and Del Zotto (his contract negotiation this summer could be a tricky one). Gudas is a bit player at this point as is Manning.

"I have no use for Rich Winter," Snider said. "He is not out for the player's best interest. He's out for his own best interest. "

That sums up about 90% of the agents in the league. Nothing but money hungry puppetmasters, dancing their guys around, pulling the strings, with no concern for the player and only for their cut. Fact is, most of them are scumbags. Whether they're "in the news"(like Winter is/was frequently) or not, most of their motives are all the same. Maximize their cut with NO regard for their player's personal interest. Heck, look at RyJo this past season, too. His agent was using him as ransom, and demanding more than was even fair... and he didn't stop at that... he basically DEMANDED the Jackets pay him that, with no negotiation.

I'm all for players getting paid accordingly, but I do not support agents using the young player as a bargaining chip, thus hurting the young player's development.

...sorry for the rant

Easily the best writer on HB. Really grateful he writes for the flyers. Always chock full of info, always detailed, always timely, always well written.

as always great in-depth insight and even handed journalism.
When you think about signings of Russian or Communist Block players from the first times the Flyers dipped into that talent pool.....I remember the signing of Rudy Tacjnar from the Czech national team
Rudy was a bit older and out of shape and I think smoked, he ended up in Maine with the early Mariners. Looked like he spent too much time at the bar and buffet.

Much more successful was Miro Dvorak- Cookie.
I remember him paired with Brad Marsh....

Who is the odd man out? Let me take a first cut at how the defense might look and who'd be left out:

Schultz - MDZ
Streit - Medvedev
Gudas - AMac

7th veteran D: Someone cheap, possibly Carlo Coloiacovo again.

That leaves out LSchenn and Nick Grossmann.

They can trade now. Actually the NHL "trade deadline" is a bit of a misnomer, because it's actually the deadline for players to be playoff eligible on a team's roster.

I completely agree. And not just because he's a Flyers blogger, by any means. Because there is a lot of Flyers writers I can't stand.. But Bill is thorough, he does his research, he's impartial on as much as he can be, and he puts a lot of effort into his write-ups. I don't know how he does it... blogging for two teams, traveling a lot, having a family... guy's good at juggling!

Seriously though, Bill... I really enjoy reading all of your blogs on here. You're awesome... thanks for all of your time and effort you put into bringing us readers the info!

So that means that after the "TDL" they can still technically trade players, but the players just can't play the rest of the season?

Well, the guy who delivered Rudy to the Flyers -- Louis Katona -- promised shortly thereafter to deliver much bigger fish: Peter, Anton and Marian Stastny. The Flyers paid him half the money up front to secure their defection and bring them over but he simply took his advance and was never heard from again by the Flyers.

That info was revealed in the original Full Spectrum.
