I genuinely hope that one of them (preferably Kessel) is gone at or before the draft (not because I think we're getting another 1st rounder either)... because it would be a definitive move in the correct direction - whether Babcock is there or not.

there would be new faces - and the old guard would be broken... .and then Babcock wanders in.

now that doesn't mean that the team will be magically better next year - they won't - but the foul stench of the existing core would be gone.

whether its a concern for the fans doesn't really matter... but it should absolutely not be the case that the team consciously goes out and only goes after Americans, or only goes after US College guys or consciously DOESN"T draft anyone from the single most prolific junior hockey player factory - the "O".

It's not just that....it's all of the cap money that will be available, once these guys are gone. There's teams in salary cap purgatory, next year, that have to let high price talent go, because of resigning other, more important players. Chicago, LA and possibly Tampa. The Islanders rebuilt their defense, for the price of a couple of second round draft picks, last year, because of this. There's no reason that the Leafs can't do the same, this year.

one would hope that this type of thing is part of the benefit of cleaning house... but they shouldn't be moving any picks (that aren't surplus) for the next couple of drafts at the very least.

You trade second rounders and later, if the price is right. They have to be valuable players, with term on their contracts, at a decent price. Chicago will have to divest themselves of players like Hossa and Sharp, because of the new contracts to Toews and Kane, that kick in this year. LA is also in one of those situations and will need to make some cap room, to sign other assets. Maybe this is where we trade the Horton Contract, for Richards and a good young asset, that allows LA to go above the salary cap, for a player with a fairly high cap hit, but is still serviceable. If they want to give us a good young asset, for the cap space, we do it!

Because he's not in the "O", as the previous poster had mentioned. And for another reason, he's a left shooting defenseman, that plays a similar game to Rielly. He'd be slotted in the second pairing, unless he's better then Rielly, then he'd move down to second pair minutes in the future. We need a first line centre....they're harder to come by. Take your pick? The number one, or number two leading scorer in the "O".
