It's because he ran team U.S.A. at the Olympics. He had first hand knowledge about the American players and relied on what he knew, and against what he didn't know.

If they could spin that deal, to pry Jones out of Nashville, they'd set themselves up within a couple of years, of making a run at the playoffs. Enough can't be said about having a top pairing defense that can play 28 minutes a game. They can slot the bottom 4 to play 18 and 14 munutes respectfully. We have the assets to try and make that deal, with Nashville probably hunting for offense, after another disappointing loss in the first round. As long as Weber is still on the team, Seth Jones will be relegated to second pair minutes.

i'm looking forward to seeing what we get in return for our players. kessel would be perfect going into nashville. he wouldn't be considered "the guy" there. less pressure from the media as well.

Especially Kessel. That 4 million dollar signing bonus is paid out on July 2nd. Any team taking him after that date, doesn't have have to pay it out of his contract. It's paid by the Leafs.
