I was told he was a salary dump. If we can get decent value for him in a trade I'm all for it.

Sometimes you've just gotta look past the verbiage; Higgins has value that would fetch a pick.

Whatever criteria suits your purpose.

Higgins outscores him every year.

- golfingsince

Higgins probably out scored clutterbuck Shaw and Abdekeder every year too and I would take any of them as a third liner in a heart bet over him. DO YOU HEAR ME . IN A HEARTBEAT

What do you think he would get in a stand alone trade and with who?

The organization has been far to short-sighted for far too long, it's time to start trading older players and bringing in younger ones who possess similar talents.

They can keep Higgins and have a 98 point season or play Jensen or Gaunce and have an 88 point season, either way, you're not winning the Stanley Cup. But the picks you acquire will help you build towards a future, letting guys walk away for free you get nothing...if that makes sense.

Does to me.

You can play the Sedins and have a 100 pt season, or play McCann and Shink and have a 70 pt season. If you're gonna miss the playoffs you might as well miss big and have a top draft pick.

I think a team like the NYI could use a veteran player like him, as an example. I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility for him to get a 2nd or 3rd round pick. Same with Bieksa, he has value, teams IMO still like what he could offer.

Douglas Murray got two second round picks for cryin out loud, those guys could help the future if they trade them.

Douglas Murray brought big hits and toughness.

Higgins could get a third, I doubt he could get a second especially in the summer. Maybe at trade deadline if a team was really desperate.

Teams usually trade for someone that fills a need. Higgins brings safe . I would be shocked if he brought a second.

Why is my post not realistic? If you aren't going to try and make the playoffs then why keep the Sedins around?

You're fooling yourself if you dont think he has value, no he doesn't play a physical game but he plays well for a bottom six guy and he's usually good defensively. He kills penalties and he's good in the shoutout.

The team is full of guys like him. Pittsburgh is another team that's top heavy, they have little depth, there's a fit out there somewhere.

He's strong along the boards, which isn't that big glamorous hit but he's effective.

They aren't going to play McCann or Virtanen in place of the twins, that's what you said, very unrealistic!!

They can however chase a playoff spot with a younger third line winger oppose to Higgins.

Why would Pitt trade a second for him when they can pick up a free agent like erat Ward Fisher Ryder Upshall Stoll Williams Brodziak and so on and so on for free, just salary?

Would you rather 31 year old Higgins for a second and his 2.5 or Joel Ward 35 for 3 mil no assets going back?

But that'll have you chasing a wildcard spot and you shouldn't have taken it so literally. The point was you can play a younger player for less money and not give too much away in terms of team success. Plus you acquire a pick.

Because he has value and they're in a win now mode with Cindy and Malkin in their prime. It's just an example, plus he's under contract at a decent rate as oppose to overpaying a UFA.

I understand that much, but he's not a guy to get rid of just to dump salary. He's a versatile player, just doesn't belong top 6. I think Jensen has much more business in the top 6, but much less in the bottom 6.

Ward (not going to be 3 million for much longer)
Fisher (always injured)
Upshall (fringe player who, also, is always injured)
Stoll (does coke off of hooker's navels- not that there is anything wrong with that)
Williams (welcome to the 80's and fossilmania)
Brodziak (obscure wanker who gets a few hits on occasion and does little or nothing else)

None of these guys is a huge (or significant) upgrade on Higgins. However, if you look at their cap hits, you will note a substantial bargain in Higgins value). Again, you didn't answer the question, Vantel, of who you would be able to fill Higgin's (very versatile) role for 2 million or less - without naming players that are going to get significant raises in the next year/two years

You might not like Higgins but you can't deny that he has quality value - for being a fairly complete (aka 'safe') player at only 2 million.

Incidentally, I think our lack of more 'safe' type players was definitely a factor in our demise against Calgary

I never said he was a salary dump, nor did I defend that position. I said it's time to sell him for a pick and have a young player step up and provide what he does.

But an 88 point season means that you were in the hunt for most of it.
