Being loud is one thing. My kids baseball games can be loud...Watch the game tonight from Calgary and you'll get it.
Honest question, do the majority of Ducks fans (in the Honda center) get the game? - geta02it
The ones you see on TV don't for the most part. The lower bowl is 85% corporate. They show up late and leave early. When they ARE in their seats they have their noses in their phones. Can't female dog too much about them though because their massive over-payment for their seats keeps my seats upstairs very affordable.
As for the loudness, Honda Center was designed first and foremost as a concert hall. Not a lot of echo in there so the crowd noise sounds muted on TV. It's one of the reasons it's the top concert hall in the U.S. That being said we're nowhere near as crazy as Canadian crowds, although I did enjoy the "We want Hiller" chants last game. |

Very true. We're not stupid enough to sit through years of DFL and keep mindlessly wasting our money watching the next #1 draft pick. There's too many other things to do down here. Apparently there is nothing else to do in Edmonton other than watching terrible hockey. |

The Canadian broadcast shows this guy and his kid after every Ducks goal doing the double gun point thing at the camera... he must work for Disney because honestly he looks like this:

Funny a local sports guy did a story from in front of a sports bar (somewhere in Anaheim) and only found 2 people who actually knew the playoffs were on...
You guys need to go to a playoff game in Canada. |

There's more to life in Southern California then hockey. I'm a die hard Duck fan (and there are plenty), but we live in an area that has arguably the best weather in the continental United States. That's also the reason there are a lot of fans from visiting teams that go to the games. People move here for the weather. There's a ton of competition for the sports dollar, and also the recreational dollar. And as was mentioned earlier, the Honda Center is a top concert venue. Sound does not reverberate like in some arenas, thus, it doesn't come across as "loud" on television. Sit inside and it's another story. I don't need to see a game in Canada to see dedicated fans.
I think it really bothers Canadian fans that two teams from California have won 3 of the last 8 Cups, and look like they'll be competitive for the foreseeable future too. Hockey is a Canadian sport, yet their teams haven't won a Cup since '93. It's unfortunate "fans" feel the need to bash another teams fan base. Oh well. |

Wow aren't you the hostile one? As a reminder 3 of the last 8 Stanley Cups have been won by a California team. When was the last time an Alberta team won the cup? We're just too tired from celebrating out here. |

Nah as the majority of players are still Canadian... Hell Getzlaf played for the Hitmen (I have his signed jersey in the den)... now the cup in Florida ...
I think allot of Canadian fans resent how the US market is catered to (or the perception). Bettman has no issues ensuring the teams in the US survive and thrive. Were the Ducks to go into an Edmonton like tail spin, would the support still be there? I doubt it, its not a slag against the fan base but as you said it competition for the sporting dollar is huge and nothing brings support like a winning team. We here will always go to games because its a part of our culture.
Look at the Oilers or worse the Leafs. In the case of the Leafs, DECADES of futility yet they are a money making juggernaut! Its a passion for the game I don't think fans in California (or Florida) get. We play this game year round and yes outside when it snows. Its just different up here. I work in a tower in DT Calgary and I see from my office probably a dozen people wering Flames jerseys walking around the block near my building, not to mention car flags, banners in bars... Again nothing against you guys but there is no comparison...
As for not seeing a game here... honestly, should you ever get a chance, you'll appreciate the difference. the building LITERALLY rocks... Its wild. |

I was going for LA the last few years in the playoffs. Mainly because I still like Sutter and then when Regehr landed there. I have never really cared for the Ducks because I thought it was a bit of a mockery to form a hockey team based off of a Disney movie. I have friends here in Calgary that are Duck fans and oddly enough Getzlaf has been one of my favourite players since he played on our WHL team the Hitmen. |

I genuinely applaud the loyalty Canadian fans feel for their teams, but I also think that may be part of the problem. Until a team starts to feel fan discontent from a pocketbook angle, what's the point of improving? If you support futility, why improve? You are absolutely correct, if Anaheim went into an Edmonton type tailspin, the support would greatly diminish. As I said, there is tough competition for the sports/entertainment dollar here. I think the fact the fans practically demand winners is a good thing. The Ducks/Kings have to stay competitive to maintain higher levels of fan support. Kings have been around 50+ years, and the Ducks for 22, so they're not going anywhere, but if they want relevance, they need to be competitive. I don't view that as being a bad thing. Is it bandwagon fans then when they support a team that's doing good and stay away when not? Tough answer. If hockey is all there is, I get the support. Here is Southern California, not an easy answer. Team doing well, lets see them play another top team. Team sucks, there's basketball, football (2 hrs south), skiing, beach, golf, desert, concerts, plays, etc., to go to instead. |

its a business, to think that they don't want playoff revenue is mistaken.
thats when they make the most
the Leafs for instance lose out on 6 million every gate, not including concessions and they don't have to pay extra to the players
thinking that winning doesn't matter is not what they do |

There is a great point. It saddens me as a person from Buffalo, who sees people show up to the arena early and the seats are full before puck drop, to come to games in Anaheim and it takes almost half a period for people to get in.
There are factors:
Traffic
Great concession stands
California time - late is generally accepted/expected
nevertheless, the fans here are not all fair weather fans. There are plenty of dedicated folks that fill the seats regularly. Plus when tickets to playoff games are around 40-50 in an arena built for hockey, it's not a bad time.

Monahan has to figure out how to win more draws. I know Getzlaf is unreal at the dot, but they are too small a line not to get the first possession. Oh well GFG |

The Saddledome is one of the worst buildings in the NHL during regular season games, great in playoffs but like a church on Sunday otherwise. Not even a fun Southern Baptist revival church either |

At least it is good to see the first line cycle and maintain possession the last few shifts. Then again, got to have more than 9 FO wins and 9 shots after the 2nd. I bet they come out flying here in the 3rd |
