Over-hyped kid - tremendous hockey sense but his lack of speed will really limit him unless he improves it. But I was wrong once before.

When Buffalo was in tank mode for McDavid you never heard a peep about him. Justice was served.

there's actually some articles that express concerns about kids, like Sam, with late birthdays and their actual draft class as opposed to the year they were taken. If that makes any sense to you?

He was drafted in 2014 but his actual draft comparisons were the kids that were drafted in 2013. He played the 2014 year primarily as a 19 year old. Jake Virtanen on the other hand played his draft year as a 17 year old.

From Botchford:

"REGRET

The Sbisa extension. The Canucks will defend this, suggesting they didn’t have much choice because of the lack of ready-to-go defensive prospects.

They’re partly right. The organization does lack top defensive prospects, especially left siders.

But the answer isn’t a bad contract, and Sbisa’s is that.

The Canucks point to his few giveaways. He has so few giveaways because he never has the puck. You know who the leaders in most giveaways were this season? PK Subban, Erik Karlsson and Brent Burns.

Two of the three are Norris Trophy finalists. You want your defencemen to have a lot of giveaways because it means they have the puck a lot.

Sbisa was fourth worst in the NHL in goals against-per 60 minutes. Kevin Bieksa was 14th. You can make a strong argument this was the worst pairing in the entire league.

And in three years, Sbisa will be making $4 million.

Maybe there wasn’t a young player to replace him, but certainly a guy like Ryan Stanton would have no problems stepping in and he would be an improvement."

Still can't believe some here were defending that signing

Wait wait wait. So you're not in favour of the Sbisa signing?

Still a very good prospect but was definitively overhyped. I felt like some people were more excited about him than a guy like Sam Reinhart which blows my mind.
- Nucker101

I just can't stand people who take these QMJHL numbers serious.

Guys like Ehler's and Drouin wouldn't even come close to those point totals if they were in the WHL which is probably the closest style to the NHL.

In all seriousness, he's a lights-out awesome young player!! The Flames were very fortunate he's there at #4.

I go through something similar with my son. Birthday in September, he will be 17 when he graduates in a couple years... Will not be old enough to legally drink until his second year of university. Almost sounds like he should have been held back a year... wet behind the ears.

Just my opinion, but Draisaitl falls under the same scenario as Sam Reinhart, personally I think the Oilers should have taken Bennett hands down.

Edit: Buffalo too for that matter!!

A lot of guys improve their skating after they've been drafted. I still like both Reinhart and Draisaitl but preferred Bennett over both.

I think this is what I have been trying to say. Bieksa has been terrible but so is Edler , they both need new addresses
- VANTEL

Very true. I've never been much of an Edler backer either and it really looks as if Bieksa doesn't want to 'play' the tough guy role anymore here. They both need to go.

Apparently Gillis had Carolinas 6th overall on the table for Edler a few years back and didn't pull the trigger...

Agree he would be a nice addition.

Imagine Kassian and Lucic out there patrolling around busting heads...would be something. If Kassian is healthy of course.

I think Bieksa sees himself as the vet who just sits back and tries to play a quiet game and picks his spots but needs to be engaged/hungry to be effective.

I want him gone. Liked his edge but doesn't bring it often enough, has trouble clearing out the front of the net and some of his gaffes.

Reinhart's goal production in Kootenay was pretty impressive but I have watched Draisaitl and Reinhart play alot here in the WHL and honestly I think Draisaitl is gonna be more of an impact player in the NHL. Could be wrong but from watching the Junior games Draisaitl was in, he controlled MUCH of the game while on the ice...Reinhart not so much.

Do you mean the 5th pick or 7th pick... they haven't picked 6th in a long long time. If it was the 5th from 2013 we missed out on Sean Monahan then
