NJ has the best pizza, Italian food, and subs in the country and is close enough to philly to have great cheesesteaks, sorry guys but it's Destiny: Kessel.
All kidding aside, Kessel could either be an amazing addition or a total train wreck here in the Garden State. It depends on if he bought into the system if you ask me. The Devils might have the situation that this guy needs to thrive. NJ is in desperate need of a star player that's not a goalie. We might be able to turn the guy into a machine.
Pros would be: you know pretty much what you are getting at least in the shorter term, opposed to speculating; the guy can consistently score, and with moderately talented players, an area where we have a significant weakness. He will have a good 4-5 years of high end usability. There's also Cory, who deserves some actual talent to work with in his prime years. A total rebuild now wouldn't be the best allocation of Schneider as a resource, so it might not be that far fetched. As a Devils fan I know I would like to see something of offensive interest, you know a goal or maybe even two here and there.
Cons are: not necessarily amount of his contract, the Devils are ok there, it's the amount and length of his contract which makes it a monster 8 mill to 2022. His lack of defensive "give a (frank)", and his "questionable character/ dedication to conditioning also don't help. He also could be perceived as prone to fading quick in his latter years with his apparent disregard for his physical prowess. If he gorged himself on our tasty ass food, didn't buy into the system, hated Lou and took a turn for the worst we could have an 8 million dollar Michael Ryder on our hands.
All in all with some cap offset, if the trade wasn't too expensive, and if his "questionable" character and heart were dissolved when/if he bought into the system and the fans bought into him, it could be a very good thing for everyone, at least for like 3-4 years, and if it got too ugly we could buy his ass out couldn't we?
Cammi - Zajac - Kessel and we have an actual first line. Cammi and Zajac have good enough back checking skills to make it not a total disaster if it took a little time to assimilate into the Devils system. All three would be signed for a few years, if the gelled it would be a decent, sustainable first line. |

You don't even need to go to the deep south, Pennsylvania is bad enough and that's under 100 miles from NYC.
As for Kessel, he'd be nice and would definitely help our offense right now, but I don't think that's a move we should make right now. It's not his cap hit that concerns me, it's the term. Toronto surely expects a 1st rd pick in return for Kessel and that's more than I'd be willing to give up for him with there being so many question marks surrounding the team right now. It's not really his cap hit that concerns me, it's the term that makes me feel like trading for him isn't the best move right now.
It's more important that we draft well this year and avoid handing out long-term deals to any FAs. Trading for a player like Kessel is something I think we should hold off on doing until next season, if not next summer. By then we'll have a better idea of what we have in our prospects, if any of young defenseman in Albany are ready to play in the NHL full-time, who we drafted with our 3 picks in the top 50, how they look in rookie camp and their progression though next season.
Once we know what we have in our farm system and whether we can trade away one of our young defenseman without creating a hole there, then making a big trade for a player like Kessel makes sense. |

presto. Gomez would have fun with those kids. He's got a youthful spirit, but also has experience and knows how to play "Devils hockey"- responsible 2-way hockey and all that.
if all pans out.. this could be a bubble team.
with that said, do we go all in now with Kessel, Cam, Zajac and Greene having a few years of their prime left, while Schneider is in his, and use what's left of Elias/Gomez?
OR
do we draft Barzal and have a franchise center to develop along the same timeline as our young dmen.. and hope everyone can be good to go in a few years while Cam has something left to give? If Kovy and Parainen come over, that changes a lot. If Boucher, Matteau, even this Blandisi kid develop into at least 2nd line players, that changes some things. It's a gamble either way. I just see about 5 years of prime Kessel, vs. about 13 years of Barzal.
the true miracle would be Lou somehow getting Kessel, without sacrificing that 6th pick. If he can do that, we could be a playoff team this year, and maybe even contenders the year or 2 after once Barzal gets some NHL experience. Could we offer Merrill+ both 2015 2nd round picks + 2016 1st? It's a lot of picks, in years that we still may not even make the playoffs.. but we still get Barzal, who has a higher probability of being a top line center, than what we'll get in the 2nd round or next year's draft. |

When the Leafs fans come here, the exchanges are colourful negotiations...
When the Rangers fans (other than Burton) come here, the exchanges become extremely uncivil... WHY? Why do we fight?! |

McLellan is still my #1. Tippet (who won't be fired) is my #2.. so by default, i guess Hitch is my #2. I just don't like the way he manages his players. Great coach tho. if Tarasenko got more minutes, and the gamble of Allen panned out for him, they'd probably be going to the next round. However.. MN has been very good. |
