This is crazy talk. Semin had a worse point per game rate than both Havlat and Ryder this past season. I don't know if I'd even want him at league minimum. - rmdevil313
I'm not arguing that trading for Semin is a great idea, although I do think he has the potential to bounce back from the awful season he had for the reasons I mentioned like his 54.5% FF% at ES over the past two seasons.
I'm just saying that if people want to bring back Kovy,I don't understand why they'd want someone who had a P/60 of .43, .67 and .71 at ES from 2010-2013. He put up solid point totals, but he needed to play huge minutes to do so. Semin at least has good FF% numbers and put up an average of 1.97 P/60 at ES since 2010-11.
It's just his ES GF% that dropped to 46.8% from 62.5% in 2012-13 when he had 13 goals and 44 points in 44GP. At ES his S/60 dropped to right about 6 from the average of around 9 he had been putting up in past as well, but those could potentially be a result of his QOT and deployment rather than a true decline in his skill. That might not be the case and he really just isn't that good anymore, but his numbers clearly look better than Kovy's over that same time period.
All this says to me that having Semin for the next 3 years at <$5M, assuming Carolina would eat $2M+ of his salary, would be the more appealing proposition to me over signing Kovy again. Even Jagr's 2013-14 season was far better than any season Kovy had in NJ when you take into account his P/60 and the fact that he drove play way more than Kovy ever had. |

He didn't need to play huge minutes... I recognized that stat with him a few years ago. The reason why they look so bad is because they double shifted him with third/fourth liners and they played him an awful lot killing penalties (which are non-offensive situations). That he was in such good shape was part of what made Kovy Kovy.
Additionally, players can sit out full seasons and be fine and rejuvenated. Crosby essentially sat out nearly a full season with his concussion problems and he came back just as good as he left.
And Semin? Seriously... I think he's one of the only guys that competes with Phaneuf for league's worst contract. I don't care what his Corsi/Fenwick is... he was on pace for 27 points playing 16 minutes a game which is between second and third line, which even playing on the third line is average at best. He also saw some time on the powerplay, and they probably limited that for a good reason (four whole powerplay points, all assists, in 83 minutes played, atrocious). |

Realistically we won't know what Lou is going to do until he does it. - K-dizzle
Yeah, this about sums it up... for all we know, he could make an insane deal with Buffalo and draft Eichel or he could trade down five times and stockpile 7 2nds this year, and then when he explains it to the media, it'll make a ton of sense. |

Wonder what the asking price on Sharp would be? I know he's 33 and that makes me hesitate, but he seems to be a guy that shows up in big games and outside of Camm he'd probably have the best shot & be the 2nd most skilled FW. - FLdevilsFAN

Have we mentioned T.J Oshie yet? That's a guy I can realistically see Lou going out to get. |

Would love that but he's part of the core in St. Louis so probs will never happen |

I seriously doubt Lou is even thinking about it. The only trades that should be entertained are those that would move us up in the draft, add picks or bring in a top 6 forward in their 20's with term left. Semin is none of those things. |

A core that has been bounced in the first round for the last 3 years. Maybe a little change is needed? |

They're going to shuffle the deck (maybe trade Oshie or someone else for a guy that plays a little bit of a different game, like Brad Marchand).
They also don't really need young D... they're 4th in the league on the PP. We don't have anything that would interest them. |

The stats I posted were 5v5 only, so it didn't include any PK minutes or PP time where he usually played the entire 2 mins. I also don't agree that the times they double shifted him on lower lines added up to all that much TOI and certainly wouldn't account for his P/60 being less than half of what Semin did at 5v5. |
