(frank) that, just take the best player at 4. Strome or Hanifin.

he's been a top 10 scorer for a while, and where has it gotten us? Hold on to him out of principal all you want, but in the end, taking even a 2nd rounder for him is worth more to our rebuild than keeping him.

It's like holding a stock you bought at $10 all the way to zero, when you could have gotten out at $5, $4, $3, $2, $1 and lived to fight another day

- clark_griswold

Exactly, he's still a good player and has a lot to offer, but the Leafs used up most of his best years. You aren't going to recoup what you put into acquiring him. Think of him like a car, a mini-van if you will.

I've seen no indication the Leafs brass (they have no GM!) are interested in picking Dylan Strome... I only assume it because they've been looking for a number 1 center for years and this might finally be their guy.
- archromat

If they know what's good for them they will grab Hanifin and be done with it, rebuilding is not a one season thing and I hope they learned that lesson (Burke and his fast lane rebuild).

My guess, way too much. Just for the pick switch would be at least the Leafs 4th, Leafs Nashville 1st pick, plus maybe Phaneuf. Now talking Domi, your getting into maybe Kadri, Percy and next years 1st?? Even that is probably too little.

That's just a guess and I could be way out there, but bottom line, it would be expensive.

Leafs management should be looking more at ways to get a couple more first round picks as opposed to flipping one.

Yup, Kessel is worth more than Domi and a second and Marner is probably going to be better than Strome.

Could go with a Bold statement and get fired

In 10 years, Feaster predicted, “Jankowski will be viewed as the best player in the 2012 draft,” adding “We felt we could take the gamble.”
-Jay Feaster

- DDM-Coga

I certainly won't advocate for this pick, but we do have 7 more years before we can analyze its accuracy. To be fair to Feaster(who by the way, put together most of the pieces that. Now form the Calgary Flames, and hired the coach that is getting the most out of those pieces) there wasn't much to pick from at the 21 spot that year. 2012 was a pretty weak draft year at an early look. Time will tell. The players that stand out above Jankowski in that draft thus far were picked before Feaster had a selection, with the exception of Tanner Pearson at #30.

It's not like Jankowski is a total bust, and who knows how his game will translate to the NHL, or if at all. Mark Jankowski just won the NCAA championship and was the best skater in that game. Of course the best player by any measure was the Providence goalie Jon Gilles, who incidentally Jay Feaster also drafted in that 2012 draft in the 3rd round and has now signed his first contract with the Flames.

Will Jankowski be considered the best pick in that draft? Probably not, but Feaster was smart enough to put a long enough time-frame on the statement that it can't really be questioned for at least a couple years from now. That didn't help save his job, but anyone brought in to trade the face of the franchise and other albatross contract players away, doesn't have much chance of sticking around once the dirty work is done.

Sorry, saying outright that Marner is going to be better than Strome is talking out of your butthole. Neither one has played an NHL game, no one can make a statement like that. Even 3-4 years from now would be premature to make that statement. Who knows how their game is gong to adjust. On top of that, it takes just one bad hit and a career can end overnight.

As for Kessel, I am actually a fan, but if he can fetch us Domi and a second, I'd do that in a heartbeat. But, sadly that's an overvalue for him.

It was a joke but He traded from 14 to 22 to select Jank.

Girgensons
Ceci
Wilson
Hertl
Teravainen
Vasilevski

all selected in that range he traded down to. Not looking like a good move anyway you look at it, especially picking a guy who would still been kicking around in the 2nd round since he wasnt even really a top 50 prospect at the time of the draft

Personally, i don't think offense has been the leafs problem the past several years (horachek period excluded), I'd take Hannafin at 4, if here's still there he's the best player available imo

Defensman are hard to develop , Hanifin and Reily could look good as a top pairing in a not so distant futur.

i've said it before and i'll say it again..as good offensively as he's been, he was worth more i believe when we acquired him than now. He has increased his point totals but his goals have never really increased much (he had 36 as a 21 year old). We paid for his best years and the return won't come close to what we gave up for him.

I said "probably" going to be better, never stated anything. So far the evidence points towards him being better.

And for Kessel is a perennial top 10 scorer who was on pace for the same until the coaching change. He could easily return to form next year. Domi is unproven and he wasn't even as good as Marner this year even though he's 2 years older.
