You should at least cheer against the Penguins intelligently. You need to support Boston and Detroit too, as all three have to beat out the Penguins.

DKs filling in for Madden on 105.9X ...his solution is to just let Martin and Ehrhoff walk and use the cap space to build a better roster. I dont disagree but I just think thats too simplistic... UFA crop isnt good...RFA crop isnt very good either. I just dont know if thats the proper way to fix the supporting cast.

They have to let those guys walk. Martin can't afford to lose a step and when he does, he's Scuderi. We have all the 35 year old defensman we can handle.

Even when Hoff was healthy, I thought he was uneven at best. No Hoff or Martin and you might be able to sign Soderberg and maybe Frolik

I also do my best to unload Sutter and Spaling to save another 5.5 and maybe use that on some bottom 6 guys with a spine.

There were way too many ppl in this forum that were ok with the Despres trade.... I'm sure they are in hiding right now.... not that Despres is blowing Lovejoy out of the water or anything. But who cares if Despres was making mistakes.... continue to play and develop him. Look at Olli Maata and Pouliot after extended looks.... every young D makes mistakes. This requirement to have safe hockey players is garbage. Despres could at least skate the puck up the ice and contribute something to the transition game. Lovejoy is another iteration of Scuderi where he'll skate backwards away from opposition and do a backhand pass to his D partner... its awful for the transition game and a huge reason why the Pens are hosed.

After the initial shock I understood the logic. Was never all in for the trade, but it made it easier to swallow and accept. After an extended look, I am back to thinking the trade was abysmal. I hate everything.

I was one. I think ultimately it will be based on the long term. However, I was basing this off of Lovejoys great performance in the playoffs and the feeling that he truly blossomed. I thought he was better slotted as a top 4 defenseman than Despres this year and a perfect partner for Pouliot.

I also thought Perron was the perfect winger for Crosby.

I'm willing to admit when I am wrong but I think both cases are incomplete. Right now, in this very moment, both moves look pretty bad. Its just so hard to judge Lovejoy on playing 25 minutes a night with no continuity in partners or system.

Good point...

Can't really say Despres would fair better.... may make the same mistakes under similar scenario. IMO this was the only season where he got a legitimate shot to do anything and he got the gate before it was done. Contract/cost controlled players for older soon to be UFA's are just boggling, especially ones that have peaked/possibly regressed.

Agree on most, Despres for Lovejoy is still a crapshoot. Lovejoy has looked shakey now because there is only 5 D. Can you imagine Despres out there? Trainwreck.
- znagle

Stop making excuses for the awful trade. It's not a crapshoot and never was. The only thing it was was crap. It doesn't matter how many d-men are out there. Cole is playing good hockey and it's not affecting him. Lovejoy is playing and he stinks. Like Savran said he is god awful - god awful. If you can't rely on him when it counts then what was the purpose of bringing him back in the first place? After all he has the "experience" the team needed. Listening to the joke that is the PR machine the Pens use through the media is he was suppose to be an improvement over Despres and that is such BS. Is he? Not even close.

Yeah, I wish I could imagine a defenseman who has over 200 hits and over 100 block shots and who is young enough that he hasn't reached his potential yet. Instead we got back a defenseman that has sucked since he has gotten here who is past 30 years old. People female doged about Despres saying that he made too many mistakes yet Lovejoy has done nothing but that here.

I had no problems if they were going to move a Despres as long as it was bringing back someone who is actually good and not a below average retread who has no future here after next season.

There's that old expression that a losing team 'lost the game', not that the winning team 'won the game'!

I think the Sens put the pressure on to win it but the Pens lost the game that they could & should have won. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory!

Last night was a collapse. The last month has been a collapse. Anyone who suggests otherwise doesn't have a clue. Up 20 points on Ottawa a month ago and now we are one point ahead and hoping to sneak our way into the play-offs? That is a collapse.

This collapse has many contributors. Ownership for its handling with Bylsma. Fire him when you fired Shero and go out and find a coach then. You could have had Trotz. Instead wait; say you are going to hire a GM and have him make the decision, even though the decision was made months ago (JR had no decision on DB).

GM - failure to draft forwards; stupid decisions on trading valuable picks for crappy rentals; poor contract deals

Head Coach - where to start

Injuries - where to start

Players - several players have been madly inconsistent or just plain and simple playing terrible hockey for a greater portion of the year.

This has all contributed to this.

Not trying to debate here because that will just cause everyone to 'mass debate' , but what do you call the Isles form? They are 2 points ahead of us & pretty much in the same sinking boat?

Credit where credit is due, the Sens have earned their place by doing that little thing called 'winning'. Pens Isles have not, even Caps can be thrown in as well. So we can yell & scream but we are not alone, & I know we don't care about anyone else but I'm just saying.

I already don't like relativism, but this is incompatible relativism. The Isles were a projected playoff threat, not 'a team retooled to finally make a deep playoff run.' DC was expected to make the playoffs and then see what happens.

The Caps and Isles haven't been underachieving for five years. The Isles and DC haven't choked 3 game 7s at home recently. The Penguins' trouble doesn't have anything to do with recent form; it has everything to do with doubling down on the core that was punked and unraveled by the Flyers in 2012.

I understand where everyone is coming from, but when you throw a team together that hasn't played together & are missing players every 2 minutes & cannot get cohesion, then you must not expect great things from them. Play a group together for 40-50 games then you will see what you have & can achieve. How many players have we used this season compared to the other teams - Rags perfect example of that?

So if we compare the Penguins to the team with the least man games lost int he NHL things look a bit better? Sure they do. But that same team destroyed the Penguins when down 1-3 last Spring. It was a different story then; St. Louis and his momma. It's always something that seemingly doesn't have to do with the Penguins being a really undisciplined, soft hockey team.

I don't think this point get's enough recognition. 50% roster turnover. I can't cite any specific statistics, but I've noticed over the years that professional sports teams (any sport) that go down this road usually don't fare all that well. Throw in a new coach and system and non-stop injury bug to add a little gasoline to the tire fire.

I know this sounds like excuse making and maybe it is, but the only center/wing combo on the team with any history is Sid and Kuni or Malkin and Kuni.
