He was big for us last year. I think he is solidly our #5 - WhiteLie
I have no problem with him as a 6/7. Guy gets way to much flack. Perfect meat and potatoes d man |

IMO there are only a handful of d men in the league who are better skaters then Tanev.
Just because Tanev doesn't produce points everybody overlooks this.
You remember Bret Hedican? Probably one of the best skating d men ever. He couldn't produce pts - Bieksa#3
I dont think this because of points, I just think Hamhuis worked his way into Olympic consideration over the past couple seasons because of how well he skates. Larger ice surface required better skaters and he beat out some very good players to be on the team. He's had an off year because of his injury but you can see a huge difference between his first 10 games back and his last 10 |

Hamhuis made the team because you know what u got. Can play him with anybody in any situation. |

Decision making is why he is a good dman and why he was on the Olympic team, he doesn't have all the physical tool or skills but is smart with the puck, doesn't panic and moves it efficiently. It's not sexy but its what wins games, Niedermayer did this for years although at a higher level obviously. |

Didn't somebody say he plays behind the #1 pair?
I mean it's one or the other. Not what convenient
Tanevs best comparable is Boumeester. Said this over and over again - Bieksa#3
Not even close... JB's stats dwarf all of Tanevs playing on a bad team. He is a team canada def. at a young age....

Need 4 well rounded D and 3 guys who can provide some offensive or grit.
As of now Hamhuis, Bieksa, Tanev are well rounded and Edler is offensive IMO the rest is either a project without much hope of success (Clendening,Weber,Sbisa) or mediocre at best projection IMO(Corrado, Stanton).
I've said it before resign Tanev, let Sbisa walk and offer the rest of the RFA two contracts only.
Spend any UFA money shoring up the bottom 6 with a guy like McQuaid/Jackman/Odyua etc and hope one of the RFA's can stick. - belcherbd
I am not against letting Sbisa walk as long as there is a physical type dman coming in to take his place.
With the big forwards of our rivals, we need some size on the back end to match up properly.
There is nothing more comical and sad than seeing guys in front of the net and Bieksa trying to push them out and they aren't moving and Bieksa is moving backwards. I guess at least he is trying. |

I keep Hamhuis. I bet even into his 30's he'll be a faster/better skater than Tanev
EDIT: Not a knock on Tanev, just think Hamhuis' skating is smooth and efficient - WhiteLie
I agree. I'm not sure why people want to get rid of Hamhuis - he is arguably our number one defenseman. He can skate or pass the puck out of the zone, he's got some offensive ability, his defensive work is excellent (although he's had a few bad games this year)
I like Tanev and hope we can keep him at a fairly reasonable price. And oh, it's not just about hits with defenseman, it's also about blocks. I asked this the other day. Which one negates a scoring chance more? a hit or a block?

I have never seen this speed you speak of... he doesn't rush the puck...he gets smashed on the dump ins. So when do we see this skating? Hedicans speed stood out... I haven't seen that from Tanev. |

He really must of ticked off Burke/management for them to give up on him. What other reasons could there be? When I've seen him play I always thought he was decent in terms of where he should be in his development. |

We need a better +/- dman, our 3 best are Edler and Stanton with +10 and Tanev with +8..... lets get the NHL +/- leader, Jason Garrison a +24.... oh wait a second - GloveHandStrong
+/- is a team stat not individual. |

Hamhuis is interesting, he has a little edge that you can easily overlook or forget about until.. woah, did he just slash or cross check that guy in front? |

You're using hits as part of your argument, but I'm suggesting that being a better player is more important when it comes to winning. Tanev's been the Canucks best d-man this year, he's young as well(youngest top 4 dman on the team) and our D prospect group is weak as hell.
He plays the toughest minutes and also allows the fewest goals against, that's the definition of a shutdown d-'man.
The only argument I'll buy is that he's injury-prone due to all the hits he takes. - Nucker101
And he has a muffin shot and isn't a PPQ ...... so basically useless after that first pass which I agree is important.

2013 Redraft: Who takes Nichushkin and who takes Horvat two years later eval. Not the final word, but I'm just curious to see whether anyone has changed their mind. I know I would have said Nichushkin up to about a month ago, now I am not so sure - bezz44
I wanted VN as well, but Horvat's play and him being a center makes it tough for me not to go with him now. I think both will be very good. |

All of his numbers are sort of where they should be though certainly it seemed like he lost a lot of intensity as the situation in Calgary became bitter |

yeah same for me. I think the fact he was a center was also one big reason why we did draft Horvat.

I agree. Horvat has got that 'beast' vibe going. You can tell he is extremely strong on his skates and tough to move. And that will only get better as time goes by. He just seems like the complete package. Skill, leadership, tenacity, offensive ability, a defensive conscience, as well as other intangibles. I just love this kid and he's certainly changed my mind about the outcome of the Schneider trade |
