Nobody is going to give up a top 5 pick for Kessel. He may be worth a top 5 but, it is more a problem of scale in relation to cap, age of a team and rebuilding priorities.

Which top 5 drafting team gives up their first round pick for Kessel?

Buffalo,
Edmonton,
Arizona,
Carolina,
....insert name of team that gives up their #1 pick for Kessel

If the Leafs have to pick 6th or 7th, I'd consider moving down in the draft, to 10 or 11 and get an asset, then see if Rantonen is still available. It looks like the top 5 are pretty much set in stone, looking at the needs of most of these teams.
- PrinceLH

I can see Rantonen going at 7 as it stands. If that's were we are, then take him and run.

Arizona. They can't score goals and need a quick turn around because they're bleeding money when they win, just imagine when they lose. Edmonton would take JVR and Bernier in a heartbeat too, another team that can't sit on their hands anymore either.

Ancient history. Burke said he thought they would be mid first round picks. I believe he was confident in his expectation.

I agree. I'd go Don Cherry on this one and take McDavid, Strome and Marner over him.

Same here. Golf is my most enjoyable online gaming experience... just relaxing, drinking some beers, and shootin' the poop with the boys. No super-duper fierce competition and no 14-year old punks having sex with our moms.

These generational talents seem to be coming annually. Wasn't MacKinnon a generational talent too?

Maybe Edmonton. They need a goalie, they want young D. It would have to be a very good package. But, there are rumblings that they might trade Hall or Eberle. Can't see them dealing either of those players and then do a deal for Kessel.

Was he really a generational talent or just a really good prospect that got hyped to the moon so people would give a poop about the draft? I'm not saying McDavid isn't a great prospect but he's not a generational talent either. He's what the Leafs need but he's not Sidney Crosby or Stamkos or even Tavares.

Also, I was talking about acquiring another top 5 pick so that doesn't automatically mean 1st overall. It could be 3rd or 4th, which is what Kessel should be able to get you in return.

Maybe another year, but not this year. Too many great young players, too much emphasis on cap control. At least 10 teams will be trying to shed big contracts come this June. Not a good year to be trying to move an expensive player.

i think someone needs a crash course on how hard it is to acquire top 3-5 picks.

never mind 2 of them in the deepest (same) draft in years

pipe dream, and not in the least bit attainable.
