Exactly... which doesn't make sense as a strategy unless you want the smaller market teams to survive.... - BINGO!
But the league put that in place, the Leafs didn't say, hey here is a ton of cash to help you out. |

Doesn't matter. Those are the rules and they don't have a choice. The league is going to operate in the best interest of the league as a whole, not in the best interest of the Maple Leafs just because they're rich. |

LOL on what basis?
That McDavid Jersey sales will single handedly pay for the Coyotes next couple years?
or that the centennial All-Star game in Toronto with C McD as the shining star will garner the most revenue of any All-Star weekend in NHL history?
Or that it really doesnt matter if the other teams sell 500 more tickets here or there, when they will still be using the Leafs, Habs and Rangers as a crutch.
Increased revenue in Toronto with Connor McDavid>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Any other lottery team in the NHL.
best for business - TheThrill
League needs to make sure that Rogers does well with its TV deal if it ever hopes to sign another big one. Best way for Rogers to make TV revenues is a long series of playoff runs for the Leafs.
Note - I don't believe that the lotteries are rigged but if they were, this would mean more than Arizona pissing away McDavid. |

I am so sick of it all. It's like accusing someone of something and then allowing them to judge their own fate. Of course the media feels they've done nothing wrong. |

This sums up my perspective 100%
It may or may not be rigged. But if the question is what suits the overall success of the NHL the best, I don't think plopping C McD in the desert is top priority |

out of the original 6, why are 3 of them not as successful financially as the other 3? What's Chicago, Detroit and Boston's excuse? - Symba007
Montreal and Toronto are in Canada so they cannot be compared with the other 4.
and no market in the NHL compares to NYC or even comes close. the Rangers are relatively unimportant on the NY sports scene and they're still the second most valuable team in the NHL.

revenue sharing basics:
•The top ten money-making teams contribute to the pool. The bottom 15 money-making teams are eligible to collect from it.
• The amount of money contributed by the top ten teams is set by a formula that includes a percentage of overall league revenues and some playoff revenues. The exact number isn't worked out until the season is over and all revenues have been counted.
• For a bottom-15 team to collect a full revenue sharing cheque, it must reach at least 80% capacity in home attendance (last year that meant averaging about 14,000 per game) and show revenue growth that exceeds the league average. Missing either threshold means a cut in the share
In 2010, a full share of revenue sharing was about $10 million.
• Teams in markets with more than 2.5 million television households cannot qualify for revenue sharing. By my unofficial estimate, that means the Rangers, Islanders, Devils, Flyers, Blackhawks, Ducks, Sharks, Stars, and Kings are ineligible.

Chicago is pretty rich these days...I mean A List Movie Star Vince Vaughn is in attendance! - AdamFrench
I realize you're joking but Chicago is an extremely corrupt city and has massive massive debt and is very close to being the next Detroit bankrupt city. Democrats have pulverized the Illinois economy while all the surrounding states have flourished under Republicans. Illinois had a republican in for a while but when he tried to fix a lot of the corrupt crap he was recalled and kicked out. |
